Apologies to my creams and balms—Disco Blush will be my go-to for the foreseeable future.

Apologies to my creams and balms—Disco Blush will be my go-to for the foreseeable future.

While I enjoy a shimmering eyeshadow, I usually opt out of any shimmer in my blushes and bronzers. The reason is simple: unless you possess extraterrestrial-like sweat glands, your cheekbones are unlikely to naturally sparkle in the light. Non-shimmery formulas, like a sheer cream blush, tend to look much more authentic for an everyday glow—as if I just finished a brisk jog. However, Carolina Gonzalez has persuaded me to embrace all things sparkling! The renowned makeup artist recently taught me how to wear "disco blush," and I’ve been reaching for it instead of my usual creams and balms ever since—whether I'm dressed casually at work or all dolled up for a special occasion. There’s something about a bit of sparkle that just uplifts your mood.

Disco blush (a term created by my beauty editor colleague Alyssa Brascia) essentially refers to a glossy, shimmery blush that makes your cheekbones shine. To achieve this look, simply mix your favorite blush color with a pearlescent or golden highlighter, and you’ll look like a dazzling disco ball in no time. You don't need to pile on the sparkle; a little goes a long way in making you look radiant. Take it from Gonzalez, who blended Armani Beauty's Acqua Highlighter in Dawn with the Cheek Tint in Rosy Peach to create a stunning disco-inspired shade for me last July.

Of course, this technique works best if you have two liquid or cream formulas that blend well, but if you'd rather not mix, you can find blush-highlighter hybrids that provide both a flattering flush and highlight the prominent areas of your face. These richly pigmented shimmers are increasingly popular and can be applied to your eyelids, lips, and even collarbones, if you're feeling adventurous. As celebrity makeup artist Buster Knight shared, "[They] are currently more fashionable than using separate highlighters." Plus, they are available in nearly every makeup format: cream, liquid, powder, etc.

How do you apply disco blush? It's a valid question since "disco blush" technically falls under both blush and highlighter categories. Should you dab it on the apples of your cheeks like blush, or sweep it toward your temples like highlighter? Personally, I prefer the latter, especially if you’re aiming for a sculpted look (makeup artists often apply blush upwards to create a lifting effect). If you can’t bear the idea of leaving your cheek apples bare, you can add some color there as well for a fresh touch; just make sure to apply more product to the higher points of your cheekbones afterward. For an extra-pearly effect, consider using a blush topper, such as Patrick Ta’s Major Glow Crème & Powder Light Reflecting Highlighter in the shade Baby, layered over your chosen blush to enhance any rosy tone instantly.

While matte, soft-focus looks tend to dominate as the temperatures drop, I anticipate a surge of glittery blush looks this fall. The autumn color palette this year is shaping up to be much brighter than in previous seasons (farewell minimalism!), making it perfectly reasonable for trendsetters to seek out glamorous cheekbones that shimmer like a disco ball. Scroll down to check out the disco blushes I plan to wear in the coming months—ranging from liquids to powders, all featuring eye-catching sparkle.
