Color Analysis Transformed My Fashion Perspective—Here’s How I’m Styling for Fall

If you've been exploring a particular segment of TikTok, you may have encountered color-analysis videos—ranging from filters that identify your seasonal palette to utilizing ChatGPT or getting professional evaluations in Korea. It sparked my curiosity, and I found myself researching it further, only to quickly realize I was uncertain about what I was doing. I knew I wasn't categorized as a winter, but beyond that, I sought guidance. This led me to Lily's Color Lab, where I received a comprehensive draping and analysis, which came with a detailed take-home guide outlining my results. The goal of the analysis was to identify what naturally complements my features, which in turn helps me choose the best options in fashion and beauty.

As fall approaches, I'm applying my findings to make more informed shopping decisions based on what truly enhances my appearance. While I won't completely revamp my wardrobe, I intend to be more conscious of colors that might wash me out and explore ways to incorporate different hues. Historically, I've often worn black, so here’s everything I discovered.

Initially, I was torn between "soft autumn" and "soft summer." Ultimately, my brilliant analyst Riley suggested soft autumn. According to my guide, this means: "Your overall appearance has an opaque quality as its main characteristic, with warmth as a secondary trait, indicating that colors with warm undertones are most suitable for your beauty. The tones of your skin, eyes, and hair blend harmoniously, creating a soft look while slightly toning down your features. In soft autumns, the contrast among skin, eyes, and hair is low to medium, and it's essential that your natural colors harmonize rather than contrast. In addition to black and white, you should avoid cold or bright colors that don’t match your undertone, like pink and royal blue, as they will overshadow you. Extremely vibrant colors like neons should also be avoided, as they conflict with your inherently soft contrast."

For visual references, thinking of well-known soft autumn celebrities like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kate Moss, Sofia Richie Grainge, Lily-Rose Depp, and Hailey Bieber can be helpful.

This season, the preferred neutrals include off-whites, warm grays, navy, greens, rose browns, chocolate browns, taupe, and teal, while true white and black can overwhelm the subtle contrast.

In terms of jewelry, gold is the optimal choice, with recommended stones including garnet, kyanite, jasper, and green malachite.

Lily's Color Lab also goes beyond clothing, providing advice on hair (with specific Wella shades tailored to you) and makeup. For soft autumn makeup, warm roses, brick reds, and terra cotta shades are most flattering for lip products. One combination recommended to me was Mac's Whirl lip liner paired with Dior's Lip Glow Oil in Rosewood, which I’m eager to try out. The guide states, "The contrast in soft autumn's natural look is medium. Lighter skin harmonizes delicately with medium-toned hair and eyes, creating a gentle and subdued appearance. Makeup colors should reflect these natural aspects. Remember, a natural soft autumn look is understated, without significant embellishments."

To delve further into color analysis, I have been consulting Drops de Cor and Four Seasons Studio.
