Here Are the Top Leggings, Based on Recommendations from 10 Fitness Instructors in New York City
At times, locating the ideal workout leggings can prove more challenging than the workout itself. Unlike other pieces in your closet, workout leggings must endure activities like burpees, reformers, Russian deadlifts, sprints, and a significant amount of perspiration. Looking stylish in your workout attire on the way to Pilates or Barry's adds to the experience, but it quickly diminishes if you find yourself constantly adjusting your leggings or noticing odd bunching in the mirror during a squat. Who better to provide insights on workout leggings that make you feel and look good than the top fitness instructors in New York City? We reached out to our favorite studios to understand what they prioritize in workout attire, their dressing habits for exercise, and naturally, which leggings they recommend. We're definitely taking notes and adding their suggestions to our shopping carts. The Pilates princess look has never seemed so appealing!

What do you consider important in a workout outfit? Fabric and comfort are essential. I seek high-quality sets that are soft, breathable, and unrestrictive—things that make me feel secure, sculpted, and confident. I engage in various movements throughout the day, whether teaching back-to-back classes, training clients, or participating in a class myself—so the material must be robust and flexible enough to move with me.
What is your approach to choosing workout clothes? I firmly believe that when you feel comfortable in your attire, confidence radiates naturally. For me, it’s not solely about body comfort but also about feeling secure and supported. I look for outfits that shape and secure me, whether I'm teaching, lifting weights, running, or practicing Pilates. I also want to appear put-together, so I try to find pieces that not only say "I'm off to train" but would also be suitable for grabbing coffee or running errands afterward. Function and style are vital—both are a must.
What are your favorite leggings and why? The Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant is always a favorite—it’s classic, timeless, and the quality is evident. I've had some of my sets for years, enduring countless sweaty workouts. The Align Leggings feature seamless tops, are exceptionally soft, and versatile enough for any movement type. I also adore the Splits59 Clare High Waist Rigor 7/8 Leggings; they’re my go-to when I want something a bit more upscale. Among all the "trendy" activewear brands, they genuinely deliver. Their leggings are, by far, the most flattering for all body types—stretchy, sculpting, and form-fitting in the ideal way. They look luxurious and live up to that expectation.

What do you consider essential in a workout outfit? I focus on two main aspects: comfort and style! My clothes need to be suitable for the workout I'm doing, which usually includes running, weight lifting, indoor cycling, or Pilates. This translates to wanting compression, a well-fitted waistband, and a supportive bra. I firmly believe in avoiding shirts when I'm working up a sweat.
What is your approach to selecting clothes for exercise? While I need to trust my clothes will stay in place during workouts, I also want to look cute! I often buy coordinating sets. When I'm working, I spend extra time seeking bottoms that match or complement the Barry's tops I wear while teaching. I feel more prepared to take on anything when my outfit appears cohesive and intentional.
What are your favorite leggings and why? I enjoy the Align Mini Flares from Lululemon. They feature a perfect flare below the calf that adds a touch of flair to a classic style. I'm also a self-proclaimed huge fan of All Access (Bandier’s brand) and am saddened they are no longer in business; I likely own around 10 pairs of their classic leggings. As summer approaches, I must mention Athleta for their bike shorts! Standing at 5'10", their 7-inch bike shorts have the ideal length for running, lifting, biking, and dancing around without concern over exposure.

What do you prioritize in a workout outfit? I'm in search of workout pieces without zippers or buttons that press into my body while lying on equipment and that will remain in place without hassle. A significant annoyance for me is having to constantly tug my leggings up. Breathability is also vital since I could be wearing any outfit actively for seven hours or more; I don’t want fabric that traps sweat against my skin for that long.
