I inquired with our editors about how they keep warm during the winters in NYC—here's what their responses were.
I'm the first to admit, "I'm cold"—and I say it no matter the season. So you can imagine how often I repeat it during a winter in New York City. Last year, I set out on a mission to finally stay warm. After hours of research (including a literal Google search for “how to stay warm in winter”), I began by purchasing a wool coat from Filippa Hägg, thermal tights, and a pair of insulated knee-high boots. This year, my resolve remains strong. I’ve been considering cashmere or leather gloves, knitted bonnets, alpaca fur hats, full-body puffers, Intimissimi tops, and Uniqlo Heattech—and I might even give in and buy a pair of Uggs. If necessary, I’ll even resort to industrial workwear for extremely low temperatures. As someone who is always cold and dislikes it, I was curious how our editors keep warm during winter—here’s what they shared with me.
The Super Puff
The Supersnug Puff
"I’m a huge fan of Aritzia’s puffer coats that perfectly balance style and warmth. The Supersnug CliMatte Puff is my go-to for winter—designed to provide warmth down to -4ºF, and its longer variants can keep you warm up to -22ºF. Choose your favorite!"
ALO Yoga
Airbrush Winter Warm Nocturne Long Sleeve
"I prioritize warm base layers in winter. I adore the feel of ALO’s Airbrush Winter Warm Nocturne Long Sleeve top, which has a body-hugging fit and the softest brushed interior for added warmth."
Allyson Payer, Senior Fashion Editor
"I bought this Toteme coat years ago and am consistently impressed by its warmth. (It doesn't appear like it would be warm, as it's not very thick.) Plus, it pairs well with everything, and you can easily wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath."
Polo Ralph Lauren
Featherweight Cashmere Beanie
"If my ears and head are cold, I feel cold all over. A cashmere beanie is my preferred choice since it’s warm without being bulky."
FP Movement
Pippa Packable Puffer Jacket
"I own this jacket in multiple colors and wear one almost daily. You won't catch me going to Pilates or walking my dog on chilly days without it."
La Canadienne
Dwayne Shearling-Lined Suede Bootie
"When looking for winter boots, you’ll find many that lack sufficient lining or are easily harmed by snow. This pair from La Canadienne is the best investment—you’ll appreciate their water-resistance and the shearling lining that keeps your feet incredibly warm. I've worn them for two winters and love every detail."
WAYF X Sara Walker
Diana Faux Fur Wrap Coat
"My friends recognize me for my impressive coat collection because I firmly believe in making a statement with outerwear. When I offer fashion advice, I always remind people that in winter, your coat makes the first impression when you enter a room, so choose wisely."
Aritzia
Leather Extra-long Gloves
"Another way to make a chic statement is to combine any little black dress with a stylish pair of gloves. I have a pair in my cart right now."
Uniqlo
Heattech Ultra Warm Leggings
"Uniqlo Heattech is my secret weapon against the NYC cold. I wear these Ultra Warm Leggings beneath trousers, skirts, and dresses to stay stylish on the city’s frigid streets."
Uniqlo
Heattech Socks (Slouch)
"Another Heattech find. I’d take advantage of the two-for-$15 deal on these Slouchy Socks."
Gap
100% Cotton Oversized Sweater
"I just picked up a 100% Cotton Oversized Sweater from Gap, and I’m looking forward to styling it this winter. I consider cotton crucial in my winter wardrobe due to its warmth and breathability."
Intimissimi
