I'm over 40 and recognized for my healthy, radiant skin—here are 23 skincare essentials I adore and recommend.
As a beauty lover in my 40s, one of my primary goals is to connect with readers in their 20s and 30s to clarify what life and beauty can be like after turning 40. I have adult children and spent a significant part of my life as a single mother. Additionally, as a Black woman running my own business while juggling various roles, I see the prevailing negative narratives surrounding aging, especially in beauty. I aim to be a beacon of hope, positivity, and inspiration, conveying that "it's not bad on this side of 40."
My path into skincare and the beauty industry started later in life. In my mid-30s, I reached a critical turning point and promised myself to prioritize my overall well-being. Taking care of my skin and hair became essential during this time. Emerging from a period of depression left my hair, skin, and mental state deteriorated, and I was physically frail. Amidst those challenges, beauty provided a much-needed uplift—I found it incredibly healing. Through beauty, I learned to care for myself, developing morning, evening, and hair care routines that naturally evolved into my current beauty practices as a 47-year-old.
In our fast-paced world, women often stretch themselves too thin, but when I close the bathroom door, I create a clear boundary for self-care, even if it's just for a few minutes. This practice has fostered genuine healing for me. I genuinely believe that a solid shower routine, haircare, and skincare work together in a therapeutic way. (And if it helps you look fantastic, that's a bonus!) Rather than being prescriptive, I have experimented with numerous products and routines over the years. My morning and evening skincare routines are now well-established, and I often receive inquiries about my favorite products and skincare tips. For my first piece as a Who What Wear editor in residence, I wanted to focus specifically on skincare. Below, you’ll find my preferred products in each category—from reliable face creams and cleansers to the extras that enhance any routine.
**Cleansers**
*Alpyn Hydrating Cold Cream Cleanser With Vitamin C & Juneberry*
I adore creamy cleansers in the morning, and currently, I’m obsessed with this one from Alpyn. It contains tiny exfoliating particles that effectively remove any leftover SPF or sweat after my early workouts. It's sheer bliss!
*iS Clinical Cleansing Complex*
This is another excellent cleanser that I alternate within my morning routine. It’s always in my shower.
*Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam*
I have a fondness for this gentle foaming cleanser from Sulwhasoo as well. With my oily skin, cleansing is crucial. While some may skip morning cleansing, I find that neglecting it leads to bumps and clogged pores.
**Essences & Toners**
*La Mer The Essential Tonic*
After cleansing, I prefer using a balancing toner or essence. La Mer’s tonic is an investment, but it’s a formula I will always treasure and highly recommend.
*House of Dohwa Gentle Rice Bran Toner*
This toner from House of Dohwa provides a refreshing splash on the face. I firmly believe an essence or toner prepares the skin for the next steps.
**Serums**
*Tatcha The Longevity Skin Strength & Age Delay Serum*
I’ve been using this new serum from Tatcha—it’s milky, hydrating, and has a lovely texture. It's a truly beautiful product!
*Lancôme Genifique Ultimate Serum*
I must also mention the Advanced Genifique Ultimate Serum from Lancôme. It's lightweight yet wonderfully moisturizing. Depending on the season and my skin's condition, this and the Tatcha serum can be hydrating enough that moisturizer feels optional—like a bonus!
**Daytime Eye Creams**
*Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Eye Cream*
This is my top-rated eye cream. It’s exceptional. As I age, eye cream has become a vital part of my routine. I prefer one that’s rich but not overly so. Shiseido’s formula seems magical; it’s special. I recently ran out and immediately repurchased.
*RoC Multi Correxion Vitamin C Eye Balm Stick*
This product is a key part of my makeup routine. It’s a brightening vitamin C balm in handy stick form, which I apply after SPF and before my makeup. Surprisingly, it prevents my concealer from creasing. Even hours later, my under-eye area remains fresh and doesn’t look dry or tired. My friends and daughters, all in their 20s, are now hooked. It’s an affordable gem readily available in drugstores!
**Nighttime Eye Creams**
*Shani Darden Skin Care Intensive Eye Renewal Cream With Firming Peptides*
A reliable choice! This eye cream from Shani Darden is a bit heavier, making it perfect for
