The Tom Ford Bible instructed me to combine these two surprising fragrances—now, I can't stop using them.
Here's a fun fact for fragrance enthusiasts (we're thrilled to have you!): Tom Ford offers a secretive guide to exclusive scent pairings, accessible only through consultations with a House fragrance expert or by exploring Reddit—though the information you find there may be somewhat outdated. This guide, known as Private Blend Styling, elegantly eliminates the ambiguity of perfume layering by specifying which fragrances to use and the exact amount to apply (yes, really; you’ll be given a precise number of sprays for each scent).
During my recent visit to Tom Ford Beauty's inaugural standalone shop in SoHo, I couldn't resist the urge to ask a slew of scent-layering questions while sampling the exquisite Private Blend fragrances. I inquired about the best crowd-pleasing combos, the most underrated mixtures, and what to mix if someone’s preferences are gourmand, woody, floral, fruity, etc. I left with several recommendations—one of which I've become utterly obsessed with spraying.
If you haven't yet discovered the alluring combination of Oud Voyager and Vanilla Sex, keep reading. I would never have considered blending these two fragrances (thanks to the Tom Ford fragrance guide!), but now they're inseparable in my mind.
### About Oud Voyager
Tom Ford's Oud Voyager Eau de Parfum features key notes such as geranium absolute, red peony accord, floral oud tri-distillate, cypriol, oud, and osmanthus. As the latest entry in Tom Ford's Private Blend line, Oud Voyager prominently features oud—an earthy, smoky, animalic note cherished for centuries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This ancient element is synonymous with luxury (often referred to as "liquid gold"), but master perfumer Dominique Ropion aimed to enhance the oud’s appeal by adding fresh, contemporary notes. In a brand master class, he remarked, "Oud is woody, but also very animalic and deep, necessitating a strong contrast." Floral notes serve this purpose ideally, particularly red peony, described by Ropion as a "very rich flower—complex but not heavy," and geranium, which brings a fresh, herbaceous quality. Helen Murphy, Tom Ford’s VP of fragrance development, added that geranium has a rosy yet juicy character.
Additionally, the scent includes a floral oud tri-distillate—an exclusive blend of the aforementioned notes to heighten their presence—as well as pink pepper, saffron, osmanthus, cypriol, patchouli, and musk. Murphy explained that cypriol and patchouli enhance the oud's richness, while osmanthus introduces a leathery, nectar-like touch. The result is a fragrance that highlights oud in a sensual manner but without the intense muskiness often found in traditional oud scents. Ropion stated, "Some ouds can be extremely animalic; this one is more woody, slightly animal-like, amber, and quite complex." This specific oud, complemented by floral nuances, makes it an ideal "starter oud" for those hesitant about oud fragrances. It’s rich and deep yet not overpowering, and when combined with Vanilla Sex (more on that shortly!), its alluring nature is magnified.
### About Vanilla Sex
Tom Ford's Vanilla Sex Eau de Parfum contains key notes such as vanilla tincture from India, vanilla absolute, sandalwood essence, jasmine absolute, orris accord, and animalis accord. What is left to say about Vanilla Sex that hasn't already been mentioned? If you’re a fan of gourmand fragrances, it’s likely a staple in your collection. Personally, it's one of the most complimented scents I own; recently, when I sprayed it at my desk, my coworkers were immediately curious about it.
The fusion of two types of vanilla with sandalwood, jasmine, orris, and animalis creates a warm, creamy finish that's tantalizing without being overly sweet. It strikes a delicate balance, allowing the sweetness to shine without overwhelming the senses, which can be a challenge for dessert-influenced fragrances. Like Oud Voyager, it prominently features a standout note (in this case, vanilla) while maintaining complexity. WWW beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock lauded it as her all-time favorite Tom Ford scent, describing it as "warm, alluring, glamorous, and sensual," with a modern touch reminiscent of classic Hollywood allure.
### The Combination I Can't Stop Spraying
Each fragrance is splendid on its own, but when you wear Oud Voyager and Vanilla Sex together, expect a flurry of compliments—consider yourself warned! After wearing this duo for 35 days, I've received countless comments on how amazing I smell. One coworker even remarked that I smelled as if I belonged in a chic French apartment, ensuring I'll never part with this luxurious combination.
Murphy states that Vanilla Sex adds an "addictive richness" to Oud Voyager, enhancing its dreamy seduction. She explains, "The almondy vanilla quality in Vanilla Sex combined with the rich woods creates something even more
