Kylie Jenner's Jelly Plaid Nails Showcase That This OPI Color Is Definitely the Most Versatile.
Out of all the Kylie Jenner nail designs I’ve saved, from tuxedo tips to chunky '90s French styles, nothing excites me more than the jelly plaid design she showcased over Thanksgiving. This look not only proves that preppy fashion is here to stay (long live the cable knits!) but is surprisingly simple to recreate—especially coming from someone who is a novice at home manicures and tends to shy away from bold colors and intricate nail art.
Jenner's jelly plaid nails may appear complex—certainly not minimal—but they are actually easier to achieve than you might expect. You’ll only need a few shades of polish, a glossy top coat, and a neutral base to bring the entire look together. Fortunately, celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt shared a tutorial that outlines every step using OPI products, including one highly coveted shade that is conveniently discounted for Cyber Monday.
The shade in question is OPI's Put It In Neutral. Ganzorigt begins with a coat of this iconic sheer-pink polish to create a milky foundation before layering on the plaid design. Even if you’re not going for Jenner's exact look, Put It In Neutral is a fantastic color to have in your collection, as it pairs well with everything. In fact, Jill Bartoshevich, OPI's global director of color equity, once told WWW that it ranks among the brand's top five best-sellers. It has a similar milky finish to Bubble Bath (another favorite), but it leans more towards a neutral-beige that doesn’t appear overly pink.
After curing the base (or allowing it to dry completely if you're using regular polish), Ganzorigt then creates a checked pattern with various mix-and-match colors, such as OPI's Cliffside Karaoke, Less Is Norse, and Suzi The First Lady Of Nails. Before applying each stripe, she mentions mixing the polishes with top coat to achieve a sheer, jelly finish. (And just so you know, OPI's Clear Top Coat is also on sale for Cyber Monday.) She uses two colors per nail—one for the primary, thicker checkered pattern and another contrasting color to fill in between those lines. After curing the nails again, she adds a final layer of top coat to seal in the shine.
What’s the outcome? A neat, preppy design with a sheer, neutral base showing through. You can use any polish colors you have at home, but I recommend purchasing Put It In Neutral for the base if you don’t already own it. It’s a wise addition to your at-home collection, as it will be useful for various polish projects—from neutral, "naked" manis to beautiful nail art, and it's currently 30% off for a limited time. Consider this your sign to embrace a new winter nail color.
