I Was Raised in an NFL Family—Here’s How I Managed Game Day When It Was Freezing Cold

Growing up with a parent in the NFL meant that my Sundays were spent in stadium seats rather than lounging on the couch. I was fortunate that home games were indoors, but certain away games really took a toll on me. There wasn't a heater in sight. It wasn’t glamorous by any means, but it fostered a confidence in me regarding cold weather that I will always carry. When I attended the University of Notre Dame for college, I thought I had experienced everything—until I started going to games in South Bend. Having season tickets each year meant I spent hours in December winds that made NFL game days feel like a breeze. Snow, gusts, and subzero temperatures—I’ve faced it all and learned the tricks to stay warm without looking like a walking parka. I still depend on these tips to endure—and even enjoy—those chilly football days.

Tip #1: Just Clothing Isn’t Enough

If you’ve attended a single high school football game, you’re already familiar with hand warmers, but the secret is using more of them than you think necessary. Put one in each glove, one in each boot, and honestly, one in your back pocket. No one will notice them, but they will be a lifesaver when the winds start howling. And if you discover a rechargeable one? Total game changer. They will indeed last for the entire game.

      Tip #2: Of Course, Heattech

No one will know you’re wearing this underneath everything, and that’s the idea. Heattech serves as your invisible shield. It provides substantial warmth without adding bulk, keeping your outfit stylish instead of puffy. I particularly like wearing the long-sleeve version under any sweater.

      Tip #3: Fleece-Lined Tights

They come in every skin tone, so the “sheer” version actually appears sheer on someone like me. These are essential if you’re sporting a skirt, dress, or oversized jersey as a dress to the game.

Tip #4: Leggings Beneath Your Jeans

This is a clever trick, and you gain extra warmth if they are Heattech. Some believe jeans will keep you warm, but trust me when I say I’ve attended games in below-freezing conditions, and the stiff, cold fabric against your skin is far from cozy. Layer them under straight-leg or wide-leg denim. I recommend avoiding skinny jeans in this scenario.

Tip #5: Dress From the Coat Down

Imagine your team’s colors are red. Start with the coat and build your stylish outfit around it. The outer layer should be the centerpiece because that’s what everyone will see when the temperature drops. I prefer selecting a coat with structure. It helps you maintain a polished appearance, even if you're secretly wearing three layers and a sweatshirt underneath.

If my team’s colors are tricky to coordinate, this coat would match anything. Additionally, if you layer properly, you can even wear a leather jacket in December. A dark-wash denim paired with a green coat would look amazing for a Seahawks fan.
