When I attended the University of Notre Dame for college, I thought I had experienced everything...until I started attending games in South Bend. Having season tickets every year meant I endured hours in December winds that made NFL game days feel like a walk in the park. Snow, strong gusts, subzero temperatures—I’ve been through it all and learned the tricks to stay warm without resembling a walking parka. I still use these tips to survive—and even enjoy—those freezing football days.

      Tip #1: Just Clothing Won't Cut It

      If you've attended a single high school football game, you're familiar with hand warmers, but the real secret is using more of them than you think you need. Place one in each glove, one in each boot, and honestly, keep one in your back pocket. Nobody sees them, but they will be lifesavers when the winds intensify. Also, if you find a rechargeable one? Total game changer. They'll last you the whole game.

      Tip #2: Of Course, Heattech

      No one will be aware you’re wearing this under everything, which is the intention. Heattech is your invisible shield. It provides genuine warmth without adding bulk, keeping your outfit stylish instead of puffy. I love to wear the long-sleeve version beneath any sweater.

      Tip #3: Fleece-Lined Tights

      They come in all skin tones, so the “sheer” version actually appears sheer on someone like me. These are a must-have if you're sporting a skirt, dress, or oversized jersey as a dress to the game.

      Tip #4: Leggings Under Your Jeans

      This is a clever trick, and you’ll get extra warmth if they’re Heattech. Some believe jeans provide warmth, but trust me when I say I've experienced games in freezing weather, and the stiff, cold fabric against your skin is anything but comfortable. Layer these under straight-leg or wide-leg jeans. I'd recommend avoiding skinny jeans in this scenario.

      Tip #5: Style From the Coat Down

      Imagine this: your team’s colors are red. Begin with the coat and build a chic outfit around it. The outer layer should be the standout piece since that’s what everyone notices when the temperature drops. I prefer a coat with structure, which helps you look put-together even if you have on three layers and a sweatshirt underneath.

      If my team has a tricky color to style, this coat would pair well with anything.
