It's Confirmed: '80s Nails Have Made a Comeback—17 Stylish Designs Reviving This "Outdated" Trend…
Everyone has a decade they wish they could travel back to. "I wish I had been born in the '70s," my best friend often says—she even got a baby blue Volkswagen Beetle when we turned 16 to illustrate her point. While I admired her vintage music taste and unique car, I always favored the bold shoulder pads, synth-heavy music, and vibrant eye shadow of the '80s. "I wish I had been a teenager in the '80s," I would retort, usually receiving a scrunched nose in reply. Later beauty critics labeled '80s trends as garish: overly loud, too colorful, and marked by ozone-depleting Aqua Net. My response? "Gag me with a spoon"—the '80s was undeniably the most liberated, expressive, and fabulously flamboyant decade of beauty in history (in my opinion). I would do almost anything to blast Mötley Crüe while I refreshed a perm 40 years ago. Although I didn’t experience the dazzling decade of music, fashion, and pop culture that my parents did, I’m thrilled to see its undeniable revival in today's beauty scene. I watched in awe as retro '80s silhouettes and beauty markers dominated this year's trends—from Yves Saint Laurent's S/S 26 show to tips from tastemakers. My particular focus has been on the latter, as seen on my Pinterest boards.
Yves Saint Laurent S/S 26 (Image credit: Launchmetrics) “The '80s were defined by color, confidence, and unapologetic self-expression,” says celebrity manicurist Pattie Yankee in an interview with Who What Wear. She shares that the “fearless energy” of that bold era is re-emerging—albeit in a more refined manner. “Nowadays, we’re witnessing a resurgence of bold individuality in fashion and beauty, especially nails,” she notes. “Bright colors, graphic patterns, and striking designs bring immediate happiness and empowerment, injecting a sense of fun into any look.” From zebra nails showcased at Bronx and Banco’s S/S 26 show to cheetah spots on Hailey Bieber's nails, I've saved plenty of photos of '80s-inspired nail art to share as I promote this era’s style. With the recent (partial) release of Stranger Things season 5, these trends are back, whether you appreciate them or not. Below, you'll find 17 nail ideas that seem pulled directly from a John Hughes movie—with a modern twist, of course.
'80s-Inspired Nail Ideas
Stripe Tease
I can’t help but echo celebrity manicurist Holly Falcone in calling this design "stripe tease," as it fits perfectly. To modernize the “outdated” zebra-print look, try drawing black stripes over clear nails. This adds a touch of 2025 flair and edginess.
Modern Pearl
Celebrity manicurist Iram Shelton might refer to this design as "frosted," but it closely resembles the pearlescent trend that flourished in the '80s. “I would love to see the pearl finish make a comeback!” says fellow celebrity nail artist Sonya Meesh. To achieve this look, follow up with a pearl top coat, like this reflective option from Le Mini Macaron.

Discotheque
This set by Falcone employs a similar clear base concept as her zebra stripe design. While it might initially remind you of '70s disco, to me, this design feels directly out of an MTV music video.
Glamazon
The fashion and beauty trends of the '80s were not known for their subtleness, and these jewel-encrusted nails perfectly embody that glamor in 2025. Recreate this look with a dance floor-inspired set that suits the vibrant, all-or-nothing vibe of this remarkable decade. (I'm personally adding this set to my cart now!)

Muted Animal Print
There’s something about this zebra set that feels distinctly 2025. Perhaps it’s the short nail shape or the muted neutral base color, but it reinforces one truth: zebra may be a vintage print, but it's ready for a comeback over leopard today. "I adore animal prints because they bring nostalgia but are easily modernized in 2025 with a subtle twist,” says another expert. Try softer, blurred lines instead of hard edges, or opt for a more subdued color palette.
Velvet Dots
"Glitter nails were another favorite from the '80s, but today's version feels more refined," shares Yankee. "Choose premium, holographic glitter polishes that create a prism-like effect," she adds. Velvet nails are a trendy, refined take that surged in popularity in 2025, creating the perfect evolved version of this vintage style. "Finely milled sparkle adds a hint of sophistication—avo
