The start of a new year resembles turning over a new leaf. This feeling often brings about the urge to establish new objectives, explore new hobbies, or even discard some negative habits. Another approach to welcome the new year with fresh purpose is to assess your possibly overflowing wardrobe and eliminate a few items that have gathered dust for an extended period. It’s all about letting go of the old to make way for the new! Personally, I need to follow my own advice in this regard, as my wardrobe doors are currently unable to close. I own multiples of certain items and have a confusing mix of seasonal pieces (my bikinis are displayed beside my scarves), some of which I could easily store away until needed. Additionally, there are a few items that no longer resonate with me. If you’re also gazing at your crammed wardrobe or drawer with a sense of despair, welcome to the club; you are in a judgment-free zone.

Now, here’s where the excitement begins. By committing to a wardrobe cleanse, you hold all the power to transform it. Removing items that no longer serve you can feel like shedding an old skin, creating valuable space to truly appreciate the clothes, shoes, and accessories that you adore, which you may not currently wear nearly enough. I prefer to conduct an annual wardrobe refresh, and this January, I plan to dedicate a chilly Sunday indoors to tackle this task effectively. With a decade of experience as a fashion editor, I consider myself somewhat skilled at this, but I sought some insider tips from a personal stylist who specializes in wardrobe refreshes. I consulted London-based stylist Kate Lauren to gain her insights, techniques, and methodologies. In short, she shares how to rejuvenate your wardrobe and make the most of what you already own while identifying gaps to facilitate mindful and intelligent shopping in the future.

Are you eager to reset your wardrobe for 2026? Now is the moment! Continue reading for our guide, tips, and tricks to kickstart your process, along with some shopping suggestions to help your wardrobe look its best for the upcoming year.

      1. How Can I Get Ready for a Wardrobe Clean-Out This January?

To begin, you must allocate significant time for this task, and I recommend avoiding evenings. Taking on this task while the sunlight streams into your space will allow for clarity in viewing your items. This ambience fosters a positive, serene experience, enabling you to see every piece you own and providing ample light for proper try-ons.

"I always say preparation starts mentally, not physically," Lauren advises. "Enter with a clear purpose. Whether your aim is to create more space, establish a cohesive wardrobe, or recognize gaps, having a goal keeps your decisions clear and minimizes overwhelm." She suggests noting which items you reach for most frequently and why. "These pieces reveal much more about your personal style than the unworn items." She also recommends acquiring a portable rail to facilitate the editing process.

"A clear mind, good lighting, and a full-length mirror can greatly impact your experience," Lauren explains. Consider playing soft music, lighting a candle, and treating this time as an enjoyable experience. This moment is yours, and it should feel affirming, enjoyable, and productive.

      2. Are There Guidelines or Systems for a Successful Wardrobe Clean-Out?

It’s vital to assess whether each item in your wardrobe serves a purpose. If not, they're merely taking up space. Lauren uses a distinct technique called "3 Ways She Stays." "I encourage clients to verify that each item can be styled in at least three different ways for three different lifestyle scenarios, such as work, weekends, evenings, or travel," she states. "This approach ensures items are truly functional in your wardrobe. We typically wear only about 20% of our wardrobes. Utilizing the '3 Ways She Stays' method during a wardrobe clean-out helps you discern which pieces deserve a place, which require styling assistance, and which can be discarded."

      3. How Do I Determine What to Keep?

This is where the temporary rail becomes useful. Pull forward any items that you wear often and love. Lauren offers great guidance: "What you keep should reflect your current lifestyle, not guilt or past versions of yourself. The pieces worth retaining are those that fit well, feel comfortable, and boost your confidence the moment you put them on."

These items should spark joy and resonate with your identity. Embrace them and incorporate them into your wardrobe—you chose them for a reason, so appreciate them.

      4. Which Items Should I Discard?

"Anything severely damaged or that no longer fits properly should be the first to go," suggests Lauren. "Clothing that makes you feel self-conscious or restricted rarely deserves a second chance, regardless of its previous beauty." If you haven't worn something in years, reflect on why. If it carries sentimental value, keep it in a safe spot that doesn’t encroach on your working wardrobe. However, if an item represents a version of you that no longer
