How to Develop the Ideal Haircare Routine, Based on Insights from Leading Experts

When I was younger, my haircare routine consisted solely of shampoo and conditioner. That was all I did, and now I cringe at the thought that I wasn’t even using a heat protectant or a nourishing hair mask before damaging my ends with a pair of outdated straighteners, not to mention I never used a hair serum. Fortunately, things have changed a lot, and with an abundance of information available about how to care for different hair types, I can confidently say that my haircare routine has evolved significantly. Similar to my skincare regimen, I’m now focused not only on products that enhance the appearance of my hair but also on the health of my hair and scalp, selecting items that will provide long-term benefits. However, with the current plethora of scalp serums, hair oils, and deep-conditioning treatments available, it can be quite overwhelming. To figure out what an ideal haircare routine entails, I consulted two prominent experts in the haircare field. I spoke with Anabel Kingsley, the lead trichologist and brand president of Philip Kingsley, and Tina Farey, editorial director at Rush Hair, about how to create the right haircare routine with appropriate products. Read on for their top advice.

How to Build a Haircare Routine

Where should one begin? "When developing a routine from the ground up, it’s crucial to start with the basics," Farey explains. "Determine your hair type, texture, and any specific concerns you want to address, and proceed from there. If you’re uncertain, consult your stylist for guidance." Farey adds that once your routine is established, maintaining consistency is vital. "Keep in mind that consistency is more important than quantity, and routines should evolve as your hair needs change," she advises. "Make sure to select products that are specifically formulated for your hair type rather than just following a trendy 'fad' on social media if you want to see effective results." Another important consideration? Every step in the routine matters. "Each step must work together to achieve your desired outcome," says Farey. "Cleansing eliminates any buildup and residue from the scalp, conditioning addresses dryness, dehydration, or damage, and treatments like hair masks, oils, and heat protectants target various hair issues."

What Does the Perfect Haircare Routine Look Like?

"The ideal haircare routine will vary from person to person," says Kingsley. "No two heads of hair are identical. You must also account for factors like seasonal changes, hair condition, styling preferences, and age." Nonetheless, Kingsley points out that there are some general principles that can guide you toward a healthy scalp and hair. If the experts were to devise a perfect routine, it might look something like this.

      The Perfect Haircare Routine

      1. Pre-Shampoo Treatment

This step is optional, but if you're looking to elevate your haircare regimen or if your hair is particularly damaged, Farey suggests starting with a nourishing pre-shampoo treatment. "One of my top picks is the Kérastase Première Bonding Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment. It's my go-to for prepping and nourishing hair before a thorough cleanse, without stripping away too much moisture." If you experience product buildup, a treatment can help ensure a more effective cleanse. "If you shampoo less frequently than every two days, use an exfoliating scalp mask before shampooing and incorporate an anti-microbial (i.e., anti-dandruff) shampoo into your wash day routine—use this as your first shampoo and follow with one tailored to your hair texture for your second wash," Kingsley recommends. "Pre-shampoo treatments can be used more liberally, with a higher concentration of active ingredients, and can be applied closer to the roots without weighing down your hair."

      2. Shampoo

Now onto the crucial shampoo step. "Shampooing eliminates old, oxidized, inflammatory oils, dead skin cells, sweat, product residue, and pollution—all factors that can build up and adversely affect scalp health and hair growth," explains Kingsley. How often you shampoo is a personal choice; for instance, those with oily roots may wash their hair more frequently than someone with dry hair. If you shampoo infrequently, it's advisable to begin with a clarifying shampoo before switching to one specifically designed for your hair type for your second rinse. However, for those who wash their hair daily or every other day, Kingsley recommends shampooing once and selecting a formula that suits your hair texture.

      3. Conditioner

"Always apply conditioner after shampooing," says Kingsley. "Conditioners detangle, reduce frizz and static, and provide a light protective layer over your hair. If you have fine or thin hair, use only a small amount, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. For thicker or coiled hair, apply liberally, but avoid the scalp."

      4. Hair Mask

While not something you need to use every time, incorporating a hydrating hair mask once or twice
