I'm a denim enthusiast, but these 5 spring trends are convincing me to put my jeans aside.
You don't need to be a fashion journalist to recognize the significance of high-quality jeans. Just like essential white t-shirts, a wool coat, or a reliable work bag, denim is fundamental to most people's capsule wardrobes. However, there's also a notable place for trousers that go beyond your classic Levi 501s. While I do appreciate my straight leg and stove pipe styles and am even considering skinny jeans, being someone who typically prefers trousers, I’m always on the lookout for alternatives to jeans. From low-rise cargo pants to capri leggings, check trousers, and even my Adidas three-stripe tracksuit bottoms (which I admit I wear more often than I probably should), there are plenty of surprising options available to replace the denim in your wardrobe.
Currently, in London, the weather is quite dreary, and while some may opt for tights and skirts (if that’s you, I genuinely commend you), and perhaps a dress or two, most of us are turning to trousers until spring arrives. Therefore, relying on the same blue jeans daily can feel monotonous. So, what fresh and interesting alternatives are there? I researched some of the most stylish individuals on the internet to gather some inspiration.
5 Anti-Jeans Trends to Wear In 2026
1. Checked Trousers
Style Notes: Among all the trouser trends on my radar for 2026, checked trousers are a relatively new entry. Perhaps the recent Burn's Night celebrations in January have prompted people to seek out tartan 'trews', or maybe it’s simply due to the impressive new Damson Madder collection. Either way, my feed has been filled with fashion insiders swapping denim for this cooler alternative. If you’re into matching sets, check out the cult label K&R London for their Y2K-inspired co-ords that have gained popularity among editors at Who What Wear. With a loose fit that feels fun and almost pajama-like (in the best way), if you enjoy gingham in the summer, you’re likely to appreciate these during winter.
2. Capri Leggings
Style Notes: I had to include a leggings trend, and while I am currently obsessed with flared leggings, I want to focus on the capri style. Despite their Y2K associations, there's something incredibly chic about how people style them today. Just like Abi’s look here, with a camel trench coat and sling-back shoes, they aren’t gimmicky or tacky but instead timeless and sophisticated. Much like your favorite jeans, they are easy to dress up or down, making them a perfect alternative when you tire of denim.
3. Satin Trousers
Style Notes: Satin trousers are ideal for transitional days and, in my opinion, are the simplest option in my anti-jeans roundup to elevate for evening wear. While jeans are often considered casual, a satin or silk pant is undeniably chic and always adds sophistication.
4. Bootcut Tailored Trousers
Style Notes: Particularly suitable for office days, black tailored trousers are a definitive capsule wardrobe essential. For 2026, I suggest opting for a slim silhouette with a bootcut flare and a lower hem on the waist if you're feeling bold, as opposed to the high-waist wide-leg tailored trousers we've all enjoyed over the past decade. While these will always have a place alongside jeans, this sleek bootleg cut feels much more refreshing.
5. Cords
Style Notes: Not suitable for summer, but definitely a trending trouser style perfect for cooler weather, corduroys are gaining popularity. In the last six months, there’s something subtly luxurious about corduroy pants compared to jeans. The texture brings a cozy feel that allows for creativity with colors—even wearing one shade from head to toe—something that typically works only when mixing fabrics. Cords are available in many colors, but I particularly love these rich and creamy tones. Just look at Christy's chocolate pair here; they pair beautifully with her Róhe leopard-print coat.
