How to Develop the Ideal Haircare Routine, as Advised by Leading Experts

When I was younger, my haircare routine was quite straightforward—just shampoo and conditioner. That was all I did. Now, reflecting on that time makes me cringe because I didn’t even use a heat protectant or a nourishing hair mask before damaging my ends with some old hair straighteners, not to mention I wasn’t applying any hair serum. Thankfully, things have changed a lot, and we now have access to more information about how to care for our specific hair types, so my haircare routine has become more sophisticated. Similar to my skincare routine, I'm no longer just focused on how my hair looks; I'm also prioritizing the health of my hair and scalp by using products that will provide long-term benefits. However, with the multitude of scalp serums, hair oils, and deep-conditioning treatments available today, it can feel a bit overwhelming. To clarify what a perfect haircare routine ought to look like, I consulted two leading experts in the haircare field: Anabel Kingsley, the lead trichologist and brand president of Philip Kingsley, and Tina Farey, editorial director at Rush Hair. Read on for their top recommendations.

So, where should you begin? Farey emphasizes that when creating a routine from scratch, starting with the basics is crucial. "Identify your hair type, texture, and any specific concerns you wish to address, and begin from there. If you're unsure, consult your stylist for guidance," she suggests. According to her, once your routine is established, consistency is vital. "Keep in mind that consistency is more important than quantity, and your routine should evolve as your hair's needs change,” she advises. "Make sure to choose products formulated specifically for your hair type, rather than those that are merely trending on social media if you want to see real results."

Another important reminder? Each step plays a crucial role. "Every step needs to work together to achieve the desired outcome," Farey explains. "Cleansing eliminates buildup and residue from the scalp, conditioning combats dryness and damage, and treatments like hair masks, oils, and heat protectants address specific hair issues."

What Does the Ideal Haircare Routine Entail?

"The ideal haircare routine varies for everyone," says Kingsley. "No two heads of hair are the same, and factors such as seasons, hair condition, styling choices, and age all play a part." Nonetheless, Kingsley outlines some general principles that can contribute to a happy scalp and healthy hair. If the experts were to design the perfect routine, it would likely resemble the following:

      1. **Pre-Shampoo Treatment**

This step is optional, but if you wish to elevate your haircare routine or if your hair feels particularly damaged, Farey recommends trying a nourishing pre-shampoo treatment. "One of my favorites is the Kérastase Première Bonding Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment. It's my go-to for preparing and nourishing hair before a thorough cleanse without stripping moisture." If you're dealing with product buildup, a treatment can also promote a more effective cleanse. "If you shampoo less than every two days, try using an exfoliating scalp mask before shampooing and incorporate an anti-microbial shampoo into your wash routine—use this as your first shampoo, and follow up with one specific to your hair texture for the second wash," Kingsley advises. "The benefits of pre-shampoo treatments include the ability to apply them liberally, higher concentrations of actives, and application closer to the roots without weighing the hair down."

      2. **Shampoo**

Next is the crucial shampoo step. "Shampooing clears away old, oxidized oils, dead skin cells, sweat, product, and pollution—all of which can diminish scalp health and hair growth," Kingsley states. How often to shampoo is entirely up to you; for instance, someone with oily roots may need to wash more frequently than someone with dry hair. If you don't wash often, it’s recommended to begin with a clarifying shampoo before using one tailored to your hair type for a second lather. Conversely, if you wash your hair daily or every other day, Kingsley suggests shampooing once based on your hair texture. The method of shampooing is also essential. "Concentrate on your scalp rather than your strands," advises Kingsley. "Avoid rubbing your hair or piling it on top of your head. There is no need to apply shampoo directly to the mid-lengths and ends; gently squeeze the suds through your lengths and rinse thoroughly."

      3. **Conditioner**

"Always apply conditioner after shampooing," instructs Kingsley. "Conditioners help detangle, reduce frizz and static, and provide a protective layer over your hair. If you have fine or thin hair, use a small amount and concentrate it on the mid-lengths and ends; for coarser or coiled hair, apply more generously, but not on your scalp."

      4. **Hair Mask**
