It wasn't the raincoat's fault; rather, it was that this practical garment was more synonymous with a mother's insistence (and her worry about me being cold and wet) than with the aspirations of a fashion-conscious girl. Whenever I had to wear a raincoat instead of one of my fun statement pieces, I felt wronged. It seemed more a matter of necessity than choice.

      My feelings about raincoats remained unchanged as I grew older. I built up an extensive coat collection to brave the New York winters, yet I never bought a new raincoat. I held onto the same one from high school, reluctantly donning it only in times of absolute need.

      Recently, however, I came to a surprising realization: raincoats had become cute. In New York, having jackets to cope with various weather conditions is essential, and of course, the stylish crowd wouldn’t just settle for anything practical that compromised style. Now, raincoats not only protect you from the rain but also allow you to look great while doing so. In fact, I would argue that some raincoats are fashionable enough to wear even when it's not raining.
