It has been more than three months since I first saw Alexa Chung donning a butter-yellow jacquard opera coat styled as a dress at a Christmas dinner in London organized by musician and producer Mike Skinner. The silk-taffeta coat featured a cocoon silhouette reminiscent of popular early 1900s styles, complete with a fur collar and cuffs crafted from repurposed mink by Bulgarian designer Viktor Gichev, who operates at One of a Kind vintage archive in Portobello Market, London. Additionally, it included a frog closure, or pankou, consisting of braided knots originating from China's Tang and Song Dynasties, typically found on cheongsam attire, along with tassel accents. I haven't been able to shake the thought of it since that moment. It hasn’t helped that the majority of these past months were spent spotting similar elaborate silk coats with fur trim on other style icons, such as Margot Robbie during her Wuthering Heights tour, Kate Moss outside the Ritz Paris, Tish Weinstock walking the runway at the Conner Ives show during London Fashion Week, and now, Zoë Kravitz, who was seen with Harry Styles following his recent hosting duties on Saturday Night Live. Sometimes I forget the enchantment of fashion while being immersed in it 24/7, but encountering pieces like these is sure to inspire awe. Gichev's creations, which are all made-to-order, have been widely discussed in various fashion circles, garnering praise from figures like Camille Charriere and Adwoa Aboah under his social media posts. He designs them in his spare time, creating Paul Poiret-inspired pieces from repurposed materials such as ornate curtains and more. In a British Vogue interview, he spoke about his practice of "letting the fabric talk." Essentially, he starts with antique fabrics and allows them to determine the shapes he will create, which results in the distinct design and tailored nature of Chung's coat.

It's no surprise that this outerwear style is being spotted everywhere at the moment—it's ideal for the confusing transition from winter to spring we’re currently experiencing. The silhouette resembles an Afghan coat (later when it was made famous in Almost Famous around 2000, it became known as a Penny Lane coat), but is much lighter and more delicate due to its construction from antique silk instead of warm sheepskin typical of those originating from Ghazni, Afghanistan in the early 20th century. While this modern interpretation may lack practicality, it compensates with artistic aesthetics and surprising versatility, as wearers are pairing their versions with everything from denim to formal gowns.

Arguably the most prominent designer of contemporary silk coats is Conner Ives, another London-based talent with high-profile acquaintances. Moss, Weinstock, and Kravitz have all sported his lavish outerwear. Ives, who grew up in New York, moved to the UK to attend Central Saint Martins. Charriere has also shared photos wearing his designs, and Jennifer Lawrence donned one on the red carpet at the end of last year while promoting Die My Love, paired with a custom Armani Privé gown. His creations are both ubiquitous and discreet—constantly discussed among fashionable individuals but never overly exposed given their handmade essence.

Ives’ fall/winter 2026 collection kicked off with Weinstock modeling a yellow demi-couture silk tapestry coat, which, according to an Instagram update from the designer, was made from large, hand-embroidered silk tapestries dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), known for its rich cultural and artistic heritage, as highlighted by the National Museum of Asian Art. Designs from these preserved fabrics were cut and hand-applied onto a silk crepe satin base to create the distinctive outerwear. "A tremendous amount of effort realized by a team that shares my passion for craftsmanship," Ives expressed. "All made locally in London." The latest appearance was by Kravitz, who donned a light-blue short version with a sheer slip and vintage Manolo Blahnik sandals sourced from The Vintage Marché. Her coat was custom-made from faux shearling derived from wool and recycled polyester, which Ives had kept as dead stock from previous collections. The outfit quickly gained viral attention, partly due to her high-profile relationship with Styles, but notably because her coat was the centerpiece of the ensemble, even with Styles wearing a much-discussed leopard-print Chanel jacket by Matthieu Blazy, a leading designer this year. Kravitz's look was styled by her longtime stylist, Danielle Goldberg.

The charm of this coat lies in its intricate craftsmanship and luxurious appearance. With clothing prices on the rise, consumers seek to feel their purchases are worth the expense, and coats like this (whether bought new from Ives or Gichev, or found secondhand like John Galliano-era Dior or vintage Sue Wong on eBay) represent a solid investment.
