On the search for the constellation of the Rabbit: Easter celebrations with astronomer Tom Kerss at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands
This year, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands invites you to spend spring break in the company of renowned astronomer Tom Kerss. His visit will take place from April 4 to 12 as part of the Masters of Crafts 2026 program. Between expeditions in the Northern Hemisphere in search of the Northern Lights, Tom will head to the warm equatorial waters to help resort guests find the original "Easter Bunny" — Lepus, the constellation of the Hare. Thanks to the unique location of the Maldives, which offers views of both northern and southern constellations, they are in for an exciting journey through the night sky with stories about lesser-known constellations and the legends associated with them.
A former astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and a member of the Royal Astronomical Society, Tom Kerss is now considered one of the leading popularizers of observational astronomy and astro-tourism. His rare talent for explaining complex cosmic phenomena simply and inspiringly has helped thousands of people see and understand the nature of the Northern Lights, solar eclipses, and other rare celestial phenomena, while his bestselling books have found readers worldwide.
During his stay at the resort, Kerss will hold a series of meetings and lectures. Among them: "Seven Wonders of the Sky" about the most impressive astronomical phenomena, including the appearance of great comets; "The Moon and You," dedicated to the influence of the Moon on culture and the development of humanity — from calendars to DNA (guests will even have the chance to touch a real fragment of lunar rock); and "Diamonds Everywhere," revealing amazing facts about the Universe — from Saturn's rings to the mysteries of the Big Bang.
A separate program has been prepared for young explorers. In the "Celestial Safari" session, children will search for animals among the constellations and get acquainted with ancient star maps, while the interactive "Star Observers" will explain how the study of the sky influenced the development of ancient civilizations.
Throughout the festive week, guests will search for Lepus — the constellation of the Hare, located near Orion and hiding many interesting objects, such as the Spirograph Nebula and the globular cluster M79. According to legend, it is connected to the origin of the Easter Bunny: according to German folklore, the goddess of spring Ostara transformed a bird frozen in the snow into a shining hare, which, in gratitude, began to bring colorful eggs — symbols of renewal, wonder, and the magic of spring.
On the island, artistic depictions of Lepus created by children's book illustrator Tom Kerss, Annie Betts, will also be on display. These works will serve as a logical transition to other activities, continuing the astronomical theme. Everyone will have the opportunity to observe the night sky through a telescope, try their hand at astrophotography, participate in interactive activities at the Ritz Kids club, or embark on a romantic night cruise on a yacht in the open ocean. The highlight of the Easter program will be a dinner under the stars with live music on a stage over the water at the famous round bar EAU Bar.
