I’m borrowing this simple French-girl styling tip to refresh all of my spring outfits.
As spring approaches, my collection of classic pieces seemed to need a touch of newness. Recently, while browsing my social media feed, I stumbled upon an incredibly simple yet stylish jeans and footwear combination advocated by one of the most fashionable French women I know: Anne-Laure Mais. The combination? White jeans paired with white flat shoes. It's truly that straightforward—simple but effective. I typically see white or ecru denim matched with black or tan shoes, which definitely works. However, opting for a matching tonal shoe added an intentional flair to the classic spring denim. While a white heel might have come off as a bit gaudy, the flats contributed a relaxed, chic finish to the entire outfit. I admire how she maintained a monochrome look with a black funnel-neck jacket from Free People and black accessories. Très chic.
After spotting the look, I did some further digging and discovered that this combination has been embraced by other stylish French women I follow—so now, I’m hooked. The best part is that I (like you might) already own a fantastic pair of white denim jeans along with some white ballet flats, which I'm eager to wear together right away. You might wonder if there are any rules for pulling off this look? Not really! Based on my findings, it works best with classic spring shoes, such as soft ballet flats, loafers, or trainers, and a hint of skin (even if covered by sheer tights like Anne-Laure’s) is always a nice touch to break up the matching hues. Both bright crisp whites and creamy off-whites appear to work well, and you can choose to match your shades or contrast them for a nice tonal effect. As with any tonal dressing, experimenting with texture is enjoyable, so I’m considering these H&M woven flats and also love the idea of shiny loafers. If you’re on board with me, I’ve included some outfit inspiration from French women below, as well as links to the best white jeans and white flat shoes available right now (in my expert opinion). Happy spring styling!
