Believe me, this French smoothing serum is just as effective (if not more so!) than your favorite retinol.

I truly love my retinol serum. My skin handles the vitamin A derivative exceptionally well, and several aestheticians have informed me that a daily, low-strength retinol is essential for keeping my typical combination skin clear and smooth. (This means that consistent yet gentle cell turnover helps manage my oily T-zone without stripping my always-dry cheeks.) I acknowledge that some individuals can't even mention the word "retinol" without experiencing redness or flakiness, and for those people, I'm more than willing to suggest alternatives to retinol. For me, though, those substitutes simply don't suffice. I want the real thing!

Fast-forward to a trip to Paris, where I tried Yon-Ka's new Retinol-Like Bi-Serum, a formula that smooths lines and tightens pores, which was launched in Europe at the end of February. It contains no retinol, yet provides all the benefits associated with it—and I'm saying this as someone who is skeptical about retinol alternatives! I've replaced my regular retinol serum with this one since I returned home (which speaks to its effectiveness), and now that it’s officially available in the U.S., it's time to share its magic. Whether you’re a beginner with retinol, a long-time user, or someone who can't handle the ingredient at all, I suggest you keep reading.

      **The Formula**

I emphasize: This is not a retinol serum. (Those averse to retinol, don’t worry!) Instead, it’s a skin-smoothing solution featuring retinol-like actives that provide similar advantages to the vitamin A derivative without any of the unpleasant side effects (like flaking, irritation, or sun sensitivity). The two key actives are biomimetic microalgae from the South of France and resin extract from Greek mastic trees, both known for their skin-rejuvenating properties. The microalgae, for instance, target skin's fibroblasts and interestingly, have a chemical structure very similar to retinoic acid (which is what retinol converts to in the skin). It’s almost like the microalgae are disguised to trick your skin cells into recognizing them as retinoic acid. Consequently, these skin cells initiate turnover, collagen production, and other benefits linked to traditional retinol. The mastic tree resin also interacts with your skin cell receptors that maintain retinoic acid levels. While the microalgae stimulate that process, the mastic ensures those levels stay robust. Pretty cool, right?

As you can see, these two actives complement each other effectively—something Yon-Ka elaborated on after two years of combining different plant-based compounds. To enhance its potency, the brand isolated the two actives into a bi-phase formula and enriched it with gardenia extract (adding that berry tint) and pink pepper oil for added antioxidant benefits. Shaking the bottle reactivates the serum and enhances the efficacy of those retinol-like components.

      **The Application**

I should mention that I’m not a fan of face oils at all. It takes an exceptionally special formula (lightweight and non-greasy) for me to include it in my routine, so I was somewhat cautious to try this oil-serum initially—only to be completely amazed by the sensory experience. Yon-Ka's Retinol-Like Bi-Serum has a light, watery texture that feels nothing like an oil, despite containing an oily phase. It absorbs immediately, even if you use more than the recommended six to eight drops, and dries down to a lovely velvety finish—without a greasy feel.

Most oil-serums I've used tend to enhance shine, which is okay, but I prefer the light, almost powdery finish of this serum. It’s lightweight enough to layer under a heavy moisturizer in winter and hydrating enough to apply alone during the warmer months. (And since there’s no actual retinol in the formula, you don’t have to worry about photosensitivity. That’s a significant advantage!) It's also worth noting for those sensitive to fragrance: This Bi-Serum has a natural scent. I usually lean towards fragrance-free options for my facial care, but the aroma here is lightly fresh with just a hint of spice from the gardenia extract and pink pepper oil, fading away within minutes of completing my skincare routine. I’ve found myself looking forward to that grounding scent whenever I approach the sink; it serves as a deliberate moment of calm at the start or end of my day.

      **My Results**

So, does the retinol-like serum actually deliver results? For 32 days, I replaced my regular retinol serum with it, and I can confidently say my complexion looks brighter, firmer, and more balanced. As I mentioned earlier, my skin thrives on consistent, gentle turnover; any break from that leads to breakouts and dull, flaky skin. To my delight,
