Winter has only just commenced, and with snowstorms appearing in seemingly every part of the U.S., it's the perfect time for our snow boots to take center stage. However, as any winter enthusiast knows, finding a quality pair of winter shoes is just one part of the equation—the other part involves proper maintenance to ensure you won’t need to replace them next year.
Let’s face it: these aren’t the shoes you choose for their style—they’re the ones you put on when the weather leaves you with no choice. By following the simple winter shoe care tips below, you can ensure your boots will last for many years, even if winter in your area means relentless snowstorms.
How to Care for Your Winter Shoes
Waterproof them
Puddles seem to appear around every corner during winter, so protecting your shoes with waterproofing is essential. Your snow boots should already be waterproofed, but applying an additional layer of protection via a waterproof spray at the start of the snowy season is wise. This applies to all your winter footwear. If you would be upset over a water stain, ensure you waterproof them before taking them out.
For boots lined with shearling or having shearling on the soles, maintain their brand-new appearance by using a shearling-specific cleaning kit. For leather boots, don’t underestimate the value of polish. Not only does the wax help maintain their fresh look, but it also waterproofs and seals them.
Use inserts to maintain their shape
To help your boots retain their shape, it's beneficial to stuff them while they dry, which prevents stretching or sagging while wet. Consider investing in boot forms to place inside your shoes during drying to keep them looking fresh, regardless of how much wear they've seen.
Give them a refresh
We all have that pair of boots that could use some TLC. If it’s mid-season and your winter boots are looking a bit worn but you’re not ready to buy a new pair, treat them to a makeover. Remove the laces and clean them or replace them if necessary. Address stains with a stain remover, then brush the fabric to revitalize it and buff out any marks. Finish with a protective spray, and your boots will be as good as new.
Check the weather report
You can’t always predict an unexpected rain or snowstorm, but you can stay informed about the forecast. Before stepping out in your favorite, freshly acquired shoes, check the weather to ensure they’re suitable for the day ahead. If storms are forecasted, choose footwear that can withstand salt and precipitation instead, which will probably be your reliable snow boots.
Keep them dry between wears
While we can hope our boots stay clear of weather-related mishaps, ultimately, Mother Nature decides, regardless of our caution. Maybe that puddle came out of the blue, or the sleet and snow fell more heavily than you anticipated. In such instances, make sure to allow your boots to dry completely between uses. There’s nothing worse than putting on a wet boot over a dry foot or discovering a muddy mess along the soles when you slip them on. Wipe them down thoroughly and place them in a warm spot to dry if they’ve just been in the snow. This will not only prevent damage but also prepare them for their next outing.
Store them properly in the off-season
Simply tossing your boots into a corner of your closet when spring arrives is a big no-no. Instead, store them neatly in a bin, away from dust and dirt, and with inserts inside to help them maintain their shape. Before doing so, clean them with a material-specific cleaner, so when you retrieve them from storage later in the year, they’re ready to wear and not covered in stains.
