I like to board a flight as if I'm heading out for a camping adventure. I'm set for every situation, with everything essential for my comfort neatly arranged. You won’t see me running low on snacks or remembering mid-flight that I forgot my headphones. My strategy for packing my personal item is meticulous, which makes maneuvering through airports and passing the time on long flights much smoother. From travel-sized toiletries to useful gadgets for entertainment on the plane, I’ve figured out exactly what deserves a prime spot in that under-the-seat area.
If you're uncertain about what to include in your personal item, let me share what I always bring. Here are my personal item essentials for a hassle-free flight.

1. Tote bag insert
I bought this tote bag insert a few years ago after finding it in an article on The Everygirl (my coworkers are the best influencers), and I’ve used it for every trip since. It has completely transformed how I organize my personal item and has made everything ten times more orderly. With numerous pockets, all those little essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and my passport) have designated places and are easily accessible. No more digging around at the bottom of my tote when I need something.
2. Water bottle
What's my first task after getting through security? Filling my water bottle. With the dry air in airplane cabins, staying hydrated becomes even tougher. I always travel with my Owala because it's large enough for a good amount of water but compact enough to fit easily into my personal item. Plus, the leak-proof lid means I don't have to worry about spills spoiling my travel experience.
3. Passport holder
Having your passport easily accessible when traveling internationally is crucial, but I don’t just toss mine in my bag without protection. I always keep my passport secured in a leather holder to make it easier to find in my personal item and to protect it from potential spills. I also store my cards and cash in this holder, letting it double as my wallet once I arrive at my destination (one less item to carry!). I appreciate that this one features a button closure, multiple credit card slots, and a zippered coin pocket (very useful in Europe!). Additionally, it has RFID-blocking technology to prevent scammers from accessing your information without your consent.
4. Noise-cancelling headphones
Even if you aren’t seated near a crying baby or an overly talkative passenger, planes can be quite loud. I wear these over-ear headphones throughout the flight, even if I'm not listening to anything. The noise-cancelling feature reduces the sound of the engine (and any noisy fellow travelers), making me feel much calmer and relaxed while in the air. Furthermore, headphones signify “do not disturb,” which is why these are a must-have in my personal item.
5. Medications
Remembering to bring essential medications when traveling is a given, but I advise against putting them in your carry-on luggage. Having experienced enough luggage separations, I know that medications should stay as close as possible. I always keep a pill container for my daily vitamins and medications—plus any emergency meds like pain relievers and Tums—in my personal item. That way, I can maintain my usual dosing schedule even while in the air, and I won’t panic if my luggage doesn’t arrive with me.
6. Hand sanitizer
Airplanes are breeding grounds for germs, so hand sanitizer is a must. I love this Touchland option because it’s very gentle on my hands (sensitive skin can be a struggle) and has a light, soothing scent. The bottle's shape allows it to easily fit into a pocket in my personal item without taking up too much space.
7. Bluetooth audio transmitter
Not all planes have seatback screens, but if mine does, I pull out this useful gadget. It plugs into the headphone jack and enables a Bluetooth connection to my headphones, so I don't have to rely on the cheap and uncomfortable earbuds offered by the flight attendants to watch an in-flight movie.
8. Kindle
I have been known to finish an entire book on one flight, making it impossible to pack enough reading material for an entire trip without my Kindle. I can download as many books as I like and read to my heart’s content without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also appreciate that I don't have to use the overhead light if I’m reading on a night flight. Plus, it's much slimmer than the printed books I usually carry, making it more convenient for placing in my tote.
9. Portable charger
There's nothing worse than boarding a flight with a nearly dead phone battery, only
