I approach boarding a flight as if I’m heading out for a camping trip. I am ready for every conceivable situation, with all my essentials for survival perfectly organized on me. I never run out of snacks or realize on the plane that I forgot my headphones. My personal item packing method is meticulously honed, making the process of navigating airports and passing time on long flights much smoother. From travel-sized toiletries to useful gadgets for in-flight enjoyment, I know precisely what deserves a prime spot in that under-the-seat area.

If you find yourself unsure about what to include in your personal item, let me share what’s inside mine. Here are the must-have items I always bring for a hassle-free flight.

      1. Tote bag insert

Several years ago, I bought this tote bag insert after seeing it featured in a The Everygirl article (co-workers can be great influencers), and I’ve utilized it on every trip since. It has dramatically improved how I organize my personal item, making everything ten times more orderly. With numerous pockets, all those small essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and my passport) are easily accessible and have their own spots. No more blindly digging around at the bottom of my tote when I need something.

      2. Water bottle

My first priority after getting through security? Filling up my water bottle. With the dry air in airplane cabins, staying hydrated becomes a bigger challenge than usual. I always carry my Owala as it holds a sufficient amount of water while being compact enough to fit into my personal item. Plus, the leak-proof lid ensures I don’t have to worry about spills ruining my travel experience.

      3. Passport holder

Having quick access to your passport while traveling internationally is essential, but I would never just toss mine in my bag unprotected. I always keep my passport securely tucked in a leather holder so it’s easy to find in my personal item and protected from potential spills. I also store all my cards and cash in the holder, allowing it to double as my wallet once I arrive at my destination (one less item to pack!). I appreciate that this holder has a button closure, several slots for credit cards, and a zippered pocket for coins (especially useful in Europe!). Additionally, it features RFID-blocking technology, preventing scammers from scanning your information without your knowledge.

      4. Noise-canceling headphones

Even if you don’t find yourself near a crying baby or an overly talkative passenger, airplanes can be loud. I wear these over-ear headphones throughout the flight, even if I’m not listening to anything. The noise-canceling feature significantly reduces engine noise (and other loud fellow travelers' sounds), helping me feel much calmer and more relaxed in the air. Moreover, headphones serve as a universal signal for “do not disturb,” earning them a must-pack slot in my personal item.

      5. Medications

Bringing necessary medications while traveling is obvious, but I advise against placing them in your carry-on luggage. I’ve experienced enough luggage separations in my travel history to know that medications should stay as close to me as possible. I always keep a pill container with my daily vitamins and medications—plus necessary emergency meds like pain relievers and Tums—in my personal item. This way, I can maintain my usual dosage schedule even while in the air, and I won’t have to stress if my luggage doesn’t arrive with me.

      6. Hand sanitizer

Airplanes are notoriously germ-filled, making hand sanitizer essential. I prefer this Touchland option because it’s gentle on my skin (sensitive skin individuals understand the struggle) and carries a light, calming scent. The design of the bottle also allows it to fit conveniently into a pocket of my personal item without adding bulk.

      7. Bluetooth audio transmitter

Not all planes have seatback screens, but if my flight does, I will pull out this useful gadget. It plugs into the headphone jack and allows me to connect via Bluetooth to my headphones of choice, so I don’t have to rely on the cheap, uncomfortable earbuds handed out by flight attendants if I want to enjoy an in-flight movie.

      8. Kindle

I have been known to finish an entire book on a single flight, so packing enough reading material for a whole trip would be impossible without my Kindle. I can download as many books as I like and read to my heart’s content without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also love that I don’t need to turn on the overhead light while reading during an overnight flight. Since it’s significantly slimmer than the physical books I usually read, it also fits much more conveniently into a tote
