I prefer to board a flight as if I’m heading out for a camping trip. I prepare for any possible scenario, with everything I need for survival neatly organized and accessible. You won't find me running out of snacks or realizing mid-flight that I've left my headphones behind. My personal item packing strategy is finely tuned, making it much easier to navigate airports and pass the time during long flights. I've figured out what travel-friendly toiletries and useful gadgets deserve a spot in that under-the-seat space.
If you're unsure about what to include in your personal item, let me share what I always pack for an effortless flight.

1. Tote bag insert
I bought this tote bag insert a few years ago after discovering it in an article on The Everygirl (co-workers truly make the best influencers), and it has been a game changer for all my trips since then. It completely transformed how I organize my personal item, making everything ten times more orderly. Those numerous pockets provide designated spots for little essentials (like lip balm, hand sanitizer, and my passport), making them easy to reach. No more searching blindly at the bottom of my tote when I need something.
2. Water bottle
As soon as I get through security, my priority is to fill up my water bottle. The dry cabin air in airplanes makes it even more crucial to stay hydrated. I always bring my Owala because it's spacious enough for a good amount of water while being compact enough to fit in my personal item. Plus, its leak-proof lid means I don’t have to worry about spills ruining my travel day.
3. Passport holder
Having your passport readily available while traveling internationally is essential, but I wouldn't simply toss mine into my bag without protection. I always keep my passport in a leather holder, making it easy to find in my personal item while protecting it from any spills. I also store all my cards and cash in the passport holder, allowing it to double as my wallet once I reach my destination (one less item to pack!). I appreciate that this holder has a button closure, several slots for cards, and a zippered pocket for coins (especially useful when in Europe!). Additionally, it features RFID-blocking technology, safeguarding my information from potential scanning.
4. Noise-canceling headphones
Even if you're not seated next to a crying baby or a talkative passenger, airplanes can be quite loud. During flights, I constantly wear over-ear headphones, even if I'm not listening to anything. The noise-canceling feature reduces engine noise (and the chatter of other passengers), helping me feel much calmer and more relaxed while flying. Also, headphones act as a universal signal for "do not disturb," securing a must-pack spot in my personal item.
5. Medications
Bringing essential medications while traveling is a given, but I advise against packing them in your checked luggage. I've had enough experiences with lost luggage to know that medications should be kept as close to me as possible. I always include a pill container with my daily vitamins and medications—alongside emergency meds like pain relievers and Tums—in my personal item. This ensures I can adhere to my usual dosage schedule, even in the air, and eliminates panic if my luggage doesn’t make it to my destination.
6. Hand sanitizer
Planes are notorious for being germ-ridden, which makes hand sanitizer essential. I love this Touchland version because it is gentle on my hands (those with sensitive skin understand) and has a pleasant, soothing scent. Its bottle shape allows it to fit neatly into a pocket in my personal item without adding bulk.
7. Bluetooth audio transmitter
While not all planes have seatback screens, when they do, I pull out this handy device. It plugs into the headphone jack and connects to my Bluetooth headphones, so I don't have to settle for those uncomfortable earbuds the flight attendants offer if I want to watch an in-flight movie.
8. Kindle
I’ve been known to finish a book on a single flight, making it impossible to pack enough reading for an entire trip without my Kindle. I can download numerous books, allowing me to read freely without needing in-flight Wi-Fi. I also appreciate that I don’t have to turn on the overhead light if reading on an overnight flight. Plus, it's much slimmer than traditional books, making it convenient for my tote.
9. Portable charger
There's nothing worse than boarding a flight with a nearly dead phone battery, only to discover there's no USB outlet within reach. For lengthy travel days filled with refreshes of my airline app and Google Maps, a full battery and portable charger are necessary. This one is especially convenient because it
