I’ll confess: Fashion for those over 50 makes minimalism appear more stylish.
As one of the fashion editors at Who What Wear UK focusing on Gen Z, it's not often that I find myself completely captivated by a look from someone outside my age group. Certainly, Alexa Chung has set the standard as the quintessential It-girl, and Kate Moss is undeniably one of the most elegant figures in fashion history. However, feeling completely entranced is a rare occurrence—until Charlize Theron made an appearance.
In New York while promoting her latest project, Apex, Charlize displayed what I like to call "new-age minimalism." Her outfits embody that quintessential understated elegance we've associated with this style, yet they feel refreshingly modern, a bit edgy, and unmistakably stylish. Imagine forward-thinking cargo Bermuda shorts paired with sleek satin pumps or a voluminous structured shirt complemented by bold (faux) fur T-bar heels. Each outfit is grounded in a familiar color scheme we adore, yet possesses a subtle seriousness. There's nothing forced about it, yet every detail appears to be thoughtfully chosen. This is minimalism with an edge, and I, for one, can't get enough. Focusing on her last three looks, I haven't seen such chic outfits for quite some time, and if this is what 50 looks like, I eagerly anticipate more. Scroll down to see and shop the looks.
1. Shirt + Silk Trousers + T-Bar Heels
This was the outfit that sparked my fascination. The combination of the intentionally oversized Saint Laurent Faille Overshirt with loose, flowing silk trousers is striking. However, the details elevate it significantly. From her statement faux-fur T-bar heels, beautifully cuffed at the ankle (creating a balloon-trouser effect—brilliant) to her oversized trendy sunglasses and sleek bob, every aspect is perfectly coordinated, blending elegance with a fashion-forward edge.

Amazona Feather-Trimmed Sandals
While this feather-detailed heel from Area's collaboration with Sergio Rossi doesn't have the T-bar or strap that enhance Charlize's version, it's a close runner-up.

Fhaite Pilot-Frame Acetate Sunglasses
In my opinion, these are the chicest sunglasses of the summer.
2. Blazer + Bermuda Shorts + Pointed-Toe Heels
It’s rare for an outfit to exude such elegance when using these directional pieces, yet Charlize has achieved it. From a funnel-neck, lace-up top to the knee-baring cargo Bermuda shorts, this ensemble could easily lean too trendy and perhaps a little too Gen Z, but as with many of her looks, it’s all in the details. The satin, sharply tailored single-button blazer adds structure, and her towering pointed-toe pumps provide that essential polish. Paired with the top-handle Dior Cigale Bag, it’s sophisticated styling at its best.

Though the Dior Cigale Bag is sold out everywhere, the DeMellier Stockholm offers a similar look.
3. Blazer + Trousers + Pearl Necklace
Demonstrating that a touch of décolletage looks great at any age, Charlize opted for a flamboyant Victorian collar adorned with pearls at the Apex red carpet instead of the usual T-shirt or blouse. By balancing her statement accessory with a slightly slouched yet impeccably tailored two-piece suit, she maintains her signature polished style, allowing the extravagant pearls to take center stage. Finishing off the look with another pointed-toe pump in the same hue, the foundation is classic, but the execution is bold.
