I’m getting ready to leave my New York City life behind and relocate to Los Angeles—here’s a list of every trend I’m letting go of in the process.

This is a formal announcement: After nearly ten years in New York City—essentially my entire adult life—I am preparing to move across the country to Los Angeles. It’s a significant change that has prompted me to carefully review my wardrobe and determine what items are worth transporting. To be honest, even with past moves within New York, I’ve never completely cleaned out my closet like this. Typically, I would just hastily toss my belongings into boxes and transport them around the city. This time, however, I’m fully committing to the process, which means embracing the Marie Kondo method. If a trend doesn't spark joy, it won't be part of my move from New York City to Los Angeles. Simple as that.

After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to leave behind six trends and have selected six anti-trend options that will accompany me in this new chapter of my life. Only the pieces I truly love will be making the journey, which is still quite a bit since I've spent my 20s intentionally curating my collection of clothing, shoes, bags, and more. I don’t plan to discard all of that effort, but I am being selective, and only those items that meet my criteria will be enjoying the sunny weather in L.A. Continue reading to see what I’ve chosen to keep and what I’m parting with before the big move.

      Leaving: Sentimental Graphic T-Shirts

      Packing: Polished Tees

For years, I have clung to what feels like hundreds of sentimental graphic T-shirts from sporting events, concerts, and fashion parties, stashed away in bins under my bed that I rarely use or think about. If you live in NYC, you know space is limited, so I’m not entirely sure why I’ve held onto these for so long, even though graphic tees are making a comeback. A move is a perfect opportunity to let go of items I never wear, so I’m finally parting with my amassed collection and keeping only polished, classic basics like boatneck and V-neck tees that I know I’ll actually wear again.

      Leaving: Capri Pants

      Packing: Low-Rise Trousers

While it’s likely capri pants will continue to trend in both NYC and Los Angeles, I’m officially done with that style and refuse to take a single pair with me. Instead, I’ll be packing low-rise tailored trousers that are sleek, polished, and versatile—ideal for those days when I’m unsure what to wear in a city that’s still new to me.

      Leaving: Classic Pumps

      Packing: Heeled Sandals

I appreciate classic pumps just as much as anyone, but I doubt I’ll need them as frequently in L.A. as I have in New York. I’m opting to make room for heeled sandals that are easier to dress up or down. While pumps are great, they lack versatility, and in a moving truck, every bit of space matters.

      Leaving: Heavy Sweaters

      Packing: Delicate Knits

I have accumulated a considerable number of heavy sweaters over my years in Chicago and New York, where warm clothing is a necessity. Now that I’m moving to a warmer climate year-round, I’m looking forward to replacing my knitwear collection with lighter, more refined options that feel less cozy and more elegant.

      Leaving: Miniskirts

      Packing: Pencil Skirts

Whenever I mention I'm relocating to Los Angeles, people often ask how my style will change, and honestly, I don’t anticipate much change. I’ll still be the one in heeled boots and a pencil skirt while everyone else opts for leggings and sneakers. Pencil skirts will remain a significant part of my L.A. wardrobe, despite the challenge they pose when getting in and out of a car. On the other hand, I’ve decided to leave miniskirts behind, and I’m perfectly fine with that.

      Leaving: Trendy Denim

      Packing: Forever Straight-Leg Jeans

Somehow, I’ve managed to fit over 30 pairs of jeans into my New York City apartment, but I refuse to relocate with that entire collection. Therefore, I've chosen to eliminate all trendy denim from my wardrobe and stick to the pairs I know will stay in style. Barrel? Cropped? Colored? No thanks; I’m only bringing along my reliable straight-leg styles from brands like Levi's, Khaite, Citizens of Humanity, and others.
