At the 2026 Met Gala, celebrities interpreted the dress code, Fashion Is Art, and the exhibition theme, Costume Is Art, in a variety of creative ways. As Hillary Kerr noted, there was a surprising abundance of headpieces. "I was really pleasantly surprised—and did not expect—the high number of veils, masks, and headpieces present," Kerr remarked. Another unforeseen interpretation was by Sabrina Carpenter in Dior, according to Kerr. "I think she looked amazing," Kerr said. "It felt like a very meta commentary on art, film, and fashion." In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Kerr discusses their favorite red carpet looks and unexpected moments with Kat Collings. For excerpts from their discussion, continue reading below.
Hillary Kerr: What stood out most to you?
Kat Collings: Let's take a moment to discuss Beyoncé, because you were emotional.
HK: Like a huge emotional baby.
KC: It was really the family aspect that I found particularly touching, right? Showing up with her daughter.
HK: But also, it’s just Beyoncé. This is her first appearance in ten years. Do you recall the last time?
KC: No.
HK: It felt like a homecoming to see her again, and I’m just filled with various emotions and joy to have her back out in public.
KC: I think you have some trends you'd like to highlight.
HK: I was genuinely surprised—and did not anticipate—the amount of veils, masks, and headpieces on display. I love it because when can you wear those in everyday life? Almost never. I’m all for it. Katy Perry in Stella McCartney had this peephole design. A face guard that was very much fencing-inspired. I’m not sure what that was about, but I adored it.
KC: Gwendoline Christie also wore a face mask. There were plenty of veiled and unveiled moments.
HK: What were some of the more surprising interpretations of the dress code we witnessed tonight?
KC: One that was more literal was Sabrina Carpenter. She was kind of wrapped in film strips referencing the movie Sabrina.
HK: The headpiece she wore with the embellished front also references the film, as Audrey Hepburn has a similar one at some point. The dress was Dior, and I think she looked stunning. It was a strong meta commentary on art, film, and fashion.
HK: Which designers suited this theme best and why?
KC: Saint Laurent received a lot of praise, which isn’t a shock since Anthony Vaccarello is a co-chair of this year’s committee. I believe Schiaparelli fit perfectly for this occasion. Kylie Jenner's look, inspired by Venus de Milo, was reminiscent of a paper-doll fantasy and felt very much aligned with the theme.
HK: I also loved Emma Chamberlain’s look, which was certainly among my favorites of the night. She wore a custom Mugler gown and collaborated with an artist who hand-painted the dress itself. It featured thirty different colors, took over 40 hours to make, and resembled a piece of abstract art draped on her body. She always brings something unique. I think her collaboration with stylist Jared Ellner is a perfect match. She consistently takes intriguing risks. I found this look unexpected, artistic, beautiful, and vibrant.
