I work in fashion in NYC—here are the seven summer shoe trends featuring in my capsule wardrobe.
Tessa Faye O'Connell is a contributor recognized for her contributions to various fashion brands, focusing on media and public relations. She currently serves as the global PR director at Coach. A mother of two, she is striving to increase her presence in the fashion industry through styling while also managing to leave the house on time. As we are aware, discussing shoes can be sensitive, but I (meaning myself) finally feel like progress is being made. With the arrival of spring and/or summer weather in New York—assuming the pleasant conditions finally become consistent—there's a wide selection of footwear for the warmer months.
Unlike winter on the East Coast, where confined shoes are the norm, the option of open footwear in spring and summer is an immediate advantage. The choices available are often more enjoyable and versatile for the season. There's something uniquely thrilling about styles we can’t wear throughout the year, making them even more appealing to put on. Here are my favorite styles that I can't wait to incorporate into my wardrobe—be it at work or on weekends.
**Flip-Flops**
I’m enamored with the thong sandal as an elevated footwear option. The bright red color looks fantastic with an all-black outfit, and the croc style from Loeffler Randall is also a favorite. They are comfortable, and many brands have created more sophisticated versions suitable for the office as well.
- **ZARA**: Flat Leather Sandals
- **Loeffler Randall**: Lina Espresso Leather Flip Flops
- **Jamie Haller**: The San Diego Sandals
- **St Agni**: Classic Thong Slides
**Fisherman Sandals**
I still think the fisherman style is stylish! It provides a closed-toe choice that pairs easily with jeans for work, and then can be switched to shorts and a top for weekends.
- **Larroudé**: Stevie Flat Sandals
- **Freda Salvador**: Sera Fisherman Sandals
- **Madewell**: The Milano Fisherman Sandals
- **Rothy's**: The Fisherman Sandals
**Strappy, Flat Black Sandals**
Margaux never disappoints, and this particular style excels in comfort and wearability. A black sandal is essential for effortlessly complementing any outfit.
- **Margaux**: The Palermo Sandals
- **A.EMERY**: The Elmer Sandals
- **Reformation**: Pina Flat Sandals
**Sporty Shoes/Mesh Flats**
Initially, I wasn't keen on this style, but I've completely changed my mind about the sporty wear/mesh aesthetic of these shoes. They are supremely comfortable (I’m talking 10,000 steps or more in the city) and can easily enhance a simple white outfit or a skirt.
- **Loeffler Randall**: Raina Dark Brown Mesh Flats
**Gold Sandals**
My gold Ancient Greek Sandals have proven to be one of my best purchases, and I’ve been wearing them for years. A gold sandal is always a great choice and adds a touch of sparkle to any spring or summer outfit without being overpowering.
- **ANCIENT GREEK SANDALS**: Eleftheria Braided Metallic Leather Sandals
- **Emme Parsons**: Susan in Washed Gold Nappa
- **TKEES**: Mariana Metallic Sandals
- **AEYDE**: Ella Gold Leather Flat Sandals
**Low Block Heels**
Want to elevate your work attire? Heading out for a drink with friends after work? Dining out with your kids? The low block heel is your go-to companion. I'm particularly fond of colorful ones for the warmer seasons.
- **ZARA**: Leather Heeled Mules
- **ZARA**: Suede Heeled Sandals
**Raffia Shoes**
I adore anything made of raffia for summer—it feels unique and isn’t something we can wear all year round. Added benefits: they are perfect for vacations and pair beautifully with summer dresses.
- **Ancient Greek Sandals**: Kardia Natural
- **Loeffler Randall**: Nico Sandals
- **Jack Rogers**: Margo Raffia Sandals
