Spicule Skincare is gaining popularity, but experts urge you to pay attention to this important advice.

When I scheduled my first "liquid microneedling" facial, I thought the claimed benefits seemed almost too good to be true. Smooth and clear skin with no downtime or actual needles? There was no way I would be that impressed. While I wouldn’t equate it directly to the intense in-office treatment, I can attest that the buzz is backed by reality. My skin appeared rejuvenated (the only way I can describe it), and it was due to tiny microspears known as spicules. If that statement made you skeptical, keep reading. Below, I’ll explain everything you need to know about this skin-smoothing technology, including a crucial tip that experts urge you not to overlook.

First off, what are spicules? Spicules are small microspears usually made from hydrolyzed sponges, although some companies have started to bioengineer them with silica to replicate the natural ones. "These offer more uniformity in size, shape, and sterility," notes aesthetician Tasha Marc. This technology gained immense popularity in Korea (as is the case with most skincare advancements!), first appearing as a professional-grade treatment before becoming available in milder at-home serums designed for regular use.

Whether spicules are natural or synthetic, "when applied to the skin, they produce microchannels in the epidermis, which can boost cellular turnover and improve the absorption of associated ingredients," explains dual-board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Eunice Park, MD, MPH. This is why the procedure is described as needle-free and liquid microneedling — you're creating tiny, temporary openings in the skin without using actual needles. Over a few days, these microspears dissolve into your skin as part of the natural cell turnover process.

What are the skincare advantages? As Park pointed out, spicules enhance the absorption of other active ingredients. By forming those microchannels, your effective serums penetrate deeper into the skin, yielding quicker and more impactful results. These microchannels also encourage collagen production by initiating your skin's wound-healing process, much like traditional microneedling, but with less disruption to the barrier. Additionally, spicules generally boost skin cell turnover, which benefits those who need assistance with clearing pores.

In summary, Marc states that spicules "provide a combination of exfoliation support, treatment penetration, and renewal signaling," unlike AHAs and BHAs that break down the bonds between dead skin cells and physical scrubs, which primarily focus on surface-level smoothing.

"What sets spicules apart is that they exist between traditional exfoliation and procedural treatments," adds Park. "In contrast to acids or scrubs, which operate by chemically or mechanically removing surface cells, spicules establish microscopic channels to deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin. However, compared to microneedling, their effect is much less profound and less controlled." In essence, no spicule serum will achieve results on par with a professional microneedling treatment. In fact, no at-home skincare product can fully replicate the benefits of an in-office procedure. "Spicule skincare occupies a very particular in-between category," remarks Marc. "It's more effective than traditional exfoliation but less invasive than professional treatments." For those seeking a middle ground, it may be an ideal option. However, if your skin is very sensitive, prone to rosacea, or highly inflamed (for instance, following a skin-tightening procedure), experts recommend you should probably avoid it.

Are spicules safe for skincare? To answer briefly: yes, as long as you’re using a high-quality, cosmetic-grade product. Don't worry—recommended options follow shortly. You might experience a slight prickling sensation when you apply a spicule-infused serum, but it shouldn't be painful. For reference, I’d rate my professional liquid microneedling experience a six out of ten on the spiciness scale, while at-home products are generally much gentler.

Nevertheless, spicule-infused skincare comes in varying intensities, and greater intensity doesn’t necessarily equate to superior results. "I appreciate spicule skincare when it's formulated with moderation. I don't think the best spicule product is the one with the highest concentration or the most intense prickling feeling," shares Brian Oh, founder and CEO of Venn Skincare, which has recently released a serum featuring 0.1% hydrolyzed sponge spicules. "Because they are physical structures, this category needs to be approached with care." Park agrees, noting, "There is still limited long-term data on spicule technology, especially with repeated use of higher-concentration formulations, so a degree of caution is warranted." Ultimately, spicules are foreign microscopic structures introduced to the skin. While they’re designed to naturally shed with your skin's cell turnover, everyone’s skin reacts differently. "Individual responses can vary, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin, underlying inflammatory conditions
