There was no way I would be that impressed. While I wouldn’t equate it directly to the intense in-office treatment, I can attest that the buzz is backed by reality. My skin appeared rejuvenated (the only way I can describe it), and it was due to tiny microspears known as spicules. If that statement made you skeptical, keep reading. Below, I’ll explain everything you need to know about this skin-smoothing technology, including a crucial tip that experts urge you not to overlook.

      First off, what are spicules? Spicules are small microspears usually made from hydrolyzed sponges, although some companies have started to bioengineer them with silica to replicate the natural ones. "These offer more uniformity in size, shape, and sterility," notes aesthetician Tasha Marc. This technology gained immense popularity in Korea (as is the case with most skincare advancements!), first appearing as a professional-grade treatment before becoming available in milder at-home serums designed for regular use.

      Whether spicules are natural or synthetic, "when applied to the skin, they produce microchannels in the epidermis, which can boost cellular turnover and improve the absorption of associated ingredients," explains dual-board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Eunice Park, MD, MPH.
