Sunscreen Formulas Are Improving Continuously—Discover the Latest, Elite, and Must-Have Options for Your Beach Bag
As a beauty editor living in the United States, it can be frustrating to recognize that we don't have access to the latest sunscreen filters found in Europe, Asia, and Australia. We might be inclined to settle for inferior products that pill, smudge, or leave unsightly white casts. It would also be tempting to dismiss American sunscreen options and advocate for stockpiling products during international travels. However, I refuse to do so because I'm a dedicated beauty journalist! What type of editor and researcher would I be if I didn't provide well-researched recommendations?
While many of the sunscreen filters available in the U.S. may seem outdated compared to global standards, it doesn't mean there are no impressive options domestically. In fact, some brands have created remarkably effective sunscreens that are silky, lightweight, and offer additional skin benefits beyond basic sun protection. How did they achieve this? I can't say for sure—it could be luck, a magic spell, or the skills of top-notch cosmetic chemists (definitely the latter).
Some of these sunscreens are so exceptional that my colleagues and I at WWW have classified them as elite. Yes, it's true—you just have to navigate through the busy market to discover the best ones. That's exactly what I’m here to help you with. Below, you’ll find WWW's guide to the best sunscreens for summer 2026.
Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist and founder/CEO of BeautyStat Cosmetics, asserts that the era of basic sunscreen lotions has come to an end. Nowadays, individuals are assembling personal sunscreen collections featuring various textures and formats. It appears that having a diverse range of sunscreens will be the norm going forward. "This year, mists, sticks, gels, primers, serums, and milks continue to gain popularity," he notes, "along with body-part specific products for areas like the scalp and lips."
While we await the approval of next-gen chemical sunscreen filters in the U.S., Robinson mentions an increase in mineral sunscreen products being launched. (Mineral and chemical sunscreens both protect against UV rays but do so differently; mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to reflect UV rays, while chemical sunscreens use avobenzone or oxybenzone to absorb them and convert them to heat.) The 2026 lineup of mineral SPFs focuses on tinted formulas and sheer finishes.
Despite the influx of new mineral sunscreens, Robinson suggests that we may not have to wait much longer for next-gen chemical filters. "One new sunscreen called Bemotrizol is expected to be approved for use in the U.S.," he explains. "This sunscreen has been utilized in other markets for years, providing broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. I'm particularly excited about it because it's easy to formulate with and interacts well with other ingredients. Approval could happen as soon as this summer."
Fingers crossed. In the meantime, keep reading to shop a selection of top-tier sunscreen formulas to take with you to the beach this summer…
**Milky Sunscreens**
Forget conventional creams and lotions. Milky sunscreens are currently the most sought-after and favored option for sun protection. They're fluid, lightweight, and absorb into the skin for a smooth, hydrated feel. Tatcha's The Milky Sunscreen SPF 50+ ($22) may emerge as the standout product of the summer with its transparent broad-spectrum sun filters that blend seamlessly into the skin. It features vitamin E and encapsulated ectoin—an excellent anti-inflammatory ingredient—that hydrates the skin and reinforces its natural barrier, while Okinawa aloe calms irritation with moisturizing properties.
Summer Fridays' Shadedrops SPF 50 Daily Mineral Milk Sunscreen ($38) is a 100% mineral formulation. It utilizes a blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect the skin without leaving a white cast, offering a slight peachy-nude tint. Its antioxidant complex, along with ceramide NP and glycerin, provides anti-aging and barrier-supporting advantages.
The same can be said for Good Weather Skin's The One All-Over Sun Milk SPF 50 ($54). This 100% mineral SPF is designed for the face but suitable for the entire body. Its universal tint ensures no visible white cast, while powerful hydrators like squalane and sea buckthorn oil enhance skin strength.
**Sunscreen Sticks**
I recently created a comprehensive guide to the best sunscreen sticks because I'm convinced they're the simplest, mess-free method to reapply SPF smoothly. Trying to apply traditional sunscreen with sandy hands can be quite the hassle, as it leads to unintended exfoliation! I keep sunscreen sticks scattered throughout my life: one in my car, one in my bag, one on my desk, and another in my stylish Zara Mesh Tote Bag ($80) reserved for beach outings.
My standards for sunscreen sticks are high. If they pull, tug, pill, or disappear as soon as I sweat, they're out. I only keep those that glide
