Jeans and flip-flops have become the preferred outfit combination for fashion enthusiasts aiming for a chic look with minimal effort. This combo is effective because it utilizes the "wrong shoe theory"—flip-flops, when worn in an unexpected context, add an intriguing element that enhances the denim. Additionally, the easy slip-on style of the footwear perfectly complements the laid-back feel of the jeans.
Take Elsa Hosk, for instance. In a series of maternity-inspired outfit photos shared on Instagram, Hosk was seen wearing low-rise baggy jeans in a vintage wash. She paired them with a plaid zip-up jacket and white thong-style wedge sandals. For accessories, she chose a white east-west Chanel bag and oversized sunglasses—two trendy pieces that completed the ensemble.
On the other side of the country, in New York City, Zoey Deutch was spotted this week in a similar casual denim ensemble. She wore a white ribbed tank (similar to Kendall Jenner's favorite Hanes top) along with low-rise cuffed jeans. For her white sandals, Deutch opted for flat flip-flops and Prada's version of an east-west bag, the popular Bonnie.
That said, this doesn’t mean black flip-flops are out of style; it simply indicates that white ones are currently the more fashionable choice. Much like the refreshing feeling of wearing white jeans after a long break, these sandals offer a crisp and stylishly unexpected addition to any outfit. Though no one has asked for my opinion, I’m sold on the combination. If I intend to wear jeans this summer, I will opt for baggy ones paired with white flip-flops.
