Spotted in NYC: The Color Trend That’s Being Worn in Place of Black

The song may be "Mellow Yellow," but the fashion scene in NYC can't help but rave about butter yellow this summer. This color trend has been prominent since last year, showcased on runways by brands like Chanel, Toteme, and Chloe, among others. While butter yellow is usually associated with a softer tone, the fashionistas in NYC are embracing a wider spectrum of shades, sporting bolder yellows alongside pastels. There’s no single way to style this color either. Recently, Telsha Anderson-Boone stepped out in a yellow-and-brown polka-dot skirt with a coordinating bandana, while Yusra Siddiqui combined a yellow T-shirt with track pants and a button-down for an everyday look.

Following the "pop of red" trend, butter yellow is just as stylish when it's seen on a sweater worn around the waist, in sneaker form, or featured prominently on a tote. If you think this trend is just a passing fad, consider the yellow dress Michelle Williams wore to the 2006 Oscars alongside Heath Ledger; two decades later, it's still one of my favorite red carpet looks. Below, explore 29 butter-yellow items that the NYC fashion crowd would undoubtedly endorse.
