When Karoline Spenning, the chief creative director of Siegelman Stable, relocated from Norway to New York City, she was venturing into unfamiliar territory. Having never visited the city before and knowing hardly anyone, she was starting fresh. However, just weeks after her arrival, a fortuitous introduction through her coworker-turned-roommate brought Max Siegelman, the chief executive director and founder of Siegelman Stable, into her life—he would eventually become her husband.
Their romance began amidst the pandemic, characterized by lengthy text conversations that crossed state lines while Siegelman temporarily stayed upstate with his family. When he finally returned to the city, he made an unplanned visit to Spenning's apartment. “I rode my bike to the gym and thought I’d stop by Karoline’s,” Siegelman remembers. “I showed up sweaty from my workout, but honestly, I would have been nervous regardless.” Spenning viewed this as a bold gesture and responded, “Sure, come say hi.”
That impromptu visit became pivotal for Spenning. They hadn’t even gone on their first date yet, but she felt it was the start of something special. “It was love at first sight,” she recalls. “When I saw him, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is my person.’ I couldn't eat or sleep.” The feeling was mutual. Just three days later, they had their first official date over coffee in Tompkins Square Park, followed by dinner in the East Village the next evening. From that moment on, they became inseparable. Four months later, they moved into Siegelman's Brooklyn apartment, beginning not only to cultivate their life together but also to establish Siegelman Stable, a fashion label that combines luxury sportswear with harness racing—launched just months before Spenning and Siegelman met. What began as a side project evolved into a shared creative venture as their relationship flourished alongside the business.
When it came to engagement, they never questioned if it would happen—only when. Confident they had discovered their lifelong partners, they took their time before Siegelman sought the help of a mutual friend, a jeweler, to find a ring. He ended up selecting a vintage cushion-cut diamond that perfectly aligned with Spenning's values of sustainability and heirloom pieces. Although they never officially discussed the proposal, Spenning had an inkling it was imminent. Siegelman told her he had booked a house upstate for a weekend getaway. Spenning laughs, “Max isn’t great at hiding things, so I knew it was coming.”
During a leisurely morning at their Airbnb, while enjoying coffee and homemade Norwegian waffles, Siegelman set his plan in motion. Unbeknownst to Spenning, a photographer was concealed in the woods, while flowers were arranged throughout the property. However, the proposal deviated from the script Siegelman had prepared. “I had a whole speech ready,” he admits. “But when the moment arrived, I couldn’t get any words out. I just got down on one knee and ugly cried.”
In May 2026, the couple brought together their closest family and friends in southeastern Sicily to celebrate the next chapter of their love story. They exchanged vows on the sun-kissed grounds of Dimora delle Balze, an elegant and secluded 19th-century transformed masseria-turned-boutique hotel. Continue reading to see how every aspect—from the custom fashion designed by Spenning to the relaxed yet intimate and romantic decor—beautifully mirrored the life they have created and will continue to build together.
Max Siegelman: "Friday night was the welcome dinner. The dress code was 'earth tones.'"
Karoline Spenning: "As our guests had traveled from afar, we wanted Friday evening to feel very relaxed, with our outfits and every detail reflecting that."
KS: “I had initially created a dress that I adored for Friday but felt it wasn’t as loose and relaxed as I wanted. Then I discovered this dress by Kettel Atelier, a designer known for sewing vintage crochet tablecloths together. My immediate thought was, ‘I need to buy this and get it overnighted, as my wedding is in a week.’ I wore it, and it was perfect. I paired it with Magda Butrym’s crochet heels. I had no jewelry for Friday, but while passing a small market in Noto, I found some bone earrings that I wore for the evening.”
