With its "rich" new fragrance, Dior has solidified this year's most significant perfume trend.
Among the many popular fragrances in a crowded market, none have captured attention quite like Dior Sauvage. Since its debut in 2015, it has claimed the title of the best-selling fragrance worldwide, leading in both men’s and women’s categories, with a bottle reportedly sold every 30 seconds. Its recognition is undeniable; however, it features a distinctive blend. With lively and spicy bergamot, earthy patchouli, and smoky vanilla, the bold scent leaves a lasting impression. Some enthusiasts cherish this "beast mode" characteristic, while others prefer a more subtle approach; regardless of where you stand, it's clear that Sauvage is a familiar name in the industry.
Developing the Sauvage line is no simple task, but renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who has served as Dior's perfume creation director since 2021, embraced this exceptional influence by introducing the most potent version yet: Dior Sauvage Extrait. "What’s trending on TikTok or Instagram highlights the power of perfumes: their longevity, their strength, how much you apply, or how little you need to," he stated in an exclusive preview with Who What Wear. "We are in a very performance-focused environment." Essentially, today's fragrance lovers desire something that makes an impact—and Sauvage Extrait is designed to attract attention.
Sauvage Extrait stands as the brand's most potent fragrance, surpassing Sauvage Elixir, which was previously Dior’s most concentrated option. "I’m not sure if we can exceed this level," Kurkdjian confesses. The formulation is also much woodier and denser—unlike Elixir, which leans toward sweet and spicy—due to an exceptionally rare oud sourced from a certified supplier in Vietnam. Different varieties of oud offer varying scent profiles based on their origin (some are smooth and sweet, while others can be intense and animalic), and the oud in Extrait presents a somewhat gentler aroma with hints of honey and incense. "I aimed to place oud wood at the core of Sauvage, as it has never before featured in its formulas or variations," Kurkdjian explained in a statement. Paired with other woody elements, like dark Atlas cedar and patchouli, the fragrance achieves a strikingly rich and enigmatic character. However, Kurkdjian opted to balance this richness with lighter Virginia cedar (considered a "luminous" wood), vetiver, and lavender to infuse additional sensuality and refinement. It's undoubtedly intense, yet surprisingly airy.
Fragrance aficionados will also appreciate the Extrait's aging process, which takes six weeks (exactly 42 days) to reach its optimal performance. During this time, all the raw materials (woods, oud, vetiver, etc.) intermix until the composition is harmoniously blended. "Have you ever had freshly made ratatouille compared to one that's two days old?" Kurkdjian asks. Just as the flavor improves as the spices meld, the perfume's ingredients develop a more cohesive scent profile the longer they combine. This maceration phase also enhances its longevity, which, as noted, is the most impressive within the entire Sauvage collection.

"Beast mode" perfumes can be quite divisive; those who appreciate them tend to fully embrace them, while others who are already uncertain may choose to avoid them. However, Kurkdjian believes that this balance provides a fragrance with personality, which is what distinguishes a "good" perfume from a truly exceptional one. After all, scent and emotion are closely linked, making it logical for a powerful fragrance to evoke strong reactions—whether affirmative or negative. "It always incites debate," Kurkdjian remarks. "This is what defines a successful perfume. You’ll experience that paradox." There might not be a more debated fragrance than Dior Sauvage, but that is what adds to its intrigue. With the launch of the highly concentrated Extrait, the fascination is set to increase.
