An Explanation of the 2027 Met Gala Theme

      The 2027 Met Gala is still over nine months away, yet we already have information about what to anticipate. Today, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that next year's Costume Institute exhibition will be titled John Galliano: Horizons. It will cover the entirety of Galliano's career up to this point, including his time as a student at Central Saint Martins in London, as well as his designs for Dior, Givenchy, Maison Margiela, and his own brand. The exhibition will be divided into three sections: "Bearings," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation." The first segment will contextualize Galliano's work historically and culturally. The second section will examine his most frequently referenced sources of inspiration, such as geography, history, art, and performance. The final part will investigate Galliano's creative process through research books, sketches, toiles, fittings, and finished garments. Galliano is familiar with controversy, and the museum's press release is straightforward. "[The exhibition] will directly address the break caused by his antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian behavior in 2010 and 2011, which led to his termination from Christian Dior and his own label, as well as his conviction by a Paris court for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, or origin," the museum noted. "It will also examine his later treatment for substance addiction and his subsequent public acknowledgment of his actions. Instead of telling a typical story of disgrace and redemption, the gallery will explore how memory, experience, cultural values, and historical contexts continually influence how a designer's work is received."
