As a former New Yorker, here are seven summer style tips I’ll always take from the Upper East Side.

After spending a summer in New York City, you come to the realization that not only do the fashion influencers of the Big Apple excel at styling, but there are numerous fashion subcultures to draw inspiration from. The style of the Upper East Side is undoubtedly one of the most legendary. Although I can't claim to have watched many episodes of Gossip Girl (which might be a sin), my time in New York saw me often sitting on the steps of The Met with friends, engaging in plenty of people-watching and soaking in the outfits of the suburb’s best-dressed individuals. (And yes, I did encounter a few real-life Lily Basses.) For those who appreciate literature, it serves as the setting for Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and was home to Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's also where Joan Didion once lived and wrote. From my own explorations through its 37 blocks, I quickly discovered that this area truly embodies its high-fashion reputation.

Like much of New York City, the fashion sense of the Upper East Side is well-known. Its streets have a rich history of luxury retail and style. After all, it is home to the legendary shopping hub Madison Avenue, and it has maintained its sartorial allure since the early 1900s. Running next to Central Park, the UES is filled with impeccably dressed individuals navigating the streets in heels, adorned with layers of jewelry and carrying stunning handbags. You’ll notice their ability to spot trends and wear them in remarkably stylish ways. Just when you get used to leopard or zebra prints, an Upper East Sider will inspire you to consider Dalmatian spots instead. They are also skilled in styling timeless wardrobe essentials. Whether it’s straight-leg jeans or top-handle clutches, an Upper East Sider can always provide an excellent example of how to wear these pieces. If your style is more classic, or if you simply enjoy picking up a few tips from some of the most fashionable individuals, focus on these seven trends from the Upper East Side that you can incorporate into your own wardrobe.

      ### 7 Upper East Side Style Trends I'm Copying in 2026

      1. **Tomato Red**

**Style Notes:** While subdued luxury and neutral palettes often dominate the closets of the chicest individuals—Upper East Siders are adventurous with vibrant colors and patterns, making them look effortlessly stunning. Tomato red is one such color that stands out among the neutrals of cream, black, and navy. I suggest trying something akin to New York-based fashion editor Coco Schiffer’s style by pairing two unexpected yet beautifully complementary colors—tomato red and chocolate brown.

       **Shop the Trend:**

       - **COS**: Ruched-Waist Cotton-Jersey Tank Top

The ruched sides give this top an elegant touch, while the bold red adds a fun flair.

       - **With Nothing Underneath**: The Weekend: Hemp, Red

Natural materials like linen and hemp can appear both casual and highly polished, aided by a crisp button-down.

       - **TOTEME**: T-Strap Leather Flats

For a minimalist aesthetic, this provides a subtle pop of red.

       - **Massimo Dutti**: 100% Linen Surplice Mini Dress

Ideal for summer evenings spent at a rooftop bar in NYC, this dress is fantastic.

      2. **Top-Handle Clutch**

**Style Notes:** During my time as a fashion intern in New York, I met a very fashionable senior magazine editor who asserted that canvas tote bags were unacceptable and that structured handbags were essential. She wasn't wrong—while I still love a canvas tote, especially for making an outfit feel more polished, a top-handle clutch with a structured design is the accessory you need for continuous elegance. Just look at the luxury market's embrace of this form, from Hermès' Kelly Pochette to Bottega Veneta's Andiamo bag to Savette's Symmetry Pochette. Upper East Siders certainly have an impressive collection of beautiful handbags, and this silhouette is a staple in their repertoire.

       **Shop the Trend:**

       - **MULBERRY**: Lily Leather Clutch Bag

Cream handbags with gold accents always exude luxury.

       - **Demellier**: The Small Hudson

An appropriately named bag for carrying around New York, perfect for holding your essentials while shopping.

       - **SAVETTE**: Symmetry Pochette Suede Tote

I’ve been admiring this bag for a couple of years now. The mint green hue is refreshing and the shape is exquisite.

       - **Veronica Beard**: Dash Clutch

This bag has a chic vibe that an Upper East Side trendsetter would carry around the city and to the Hamptons.

      3. **Structured Blazers**

**Style Notes:** A blazer is an everlasting essential in any capsule wardrobe, and if
