Living in New York City requires a good pair of walking shoes, and since I don’t wear sneakers outside the gym, I’m always on the lookout for stylish alternatives that align with my personal taste while remaining comfortable. Typically, I opt for ballet flats, kitten-heel sandals, low-heel pumps, loafers, or knee-high boots, but these aren't always suitable for long walks. On those occasions, I turn to Mary Janes from Camper, Naturalizer, and vintage brands from eBay—all dependable choices for when I’m on my feet for extended periods.

For years, I was intrigued by the iconic '90s Nike Air Rifts, despite their split-toe design being likened to horse hooves or rabbit feet. Then NikeSkims, a brand created through the collaboration of Nike and Kim Kardashian's Skims, released a fashionable reinterpretation of the original design: the Mesh Rift. More recently, they introduced the Rift Satin, replacing the breathable mesh with sleek satin.

As one of my favorite Saturday pastimes is taking long walks, I decided to give them a try over the weekend. I have narrow feet and ordered my usual size, which fit perfectly. My first wear coincided with an 86-degree day, yet I managed to walk 19,552 steps without developing a single blister.

One feature I appreciated was the Velcro straps, which made them easy to put on and take off—perfect for errands, trying on clothes while shopping, and attending a Pilates class. Since I didn’t bring sneakers on a recent trip to L.A., I would even use them for hiking. After wearing them around Manhattan, I can confidently say they are an excellent substitute for traditional sneakers and passed my comfort test for walking shoes.
