Farewell, Sambas—5 Sneaker Trends I'm Embracing This Fall and 5 I'm Moving On From.
In the past year or so, I've gathered a diverse assortment of Adidas Sambas—black and red, bright green, and even metallic silver. Honestly, I'm usually not one to shy away from a trendy item, particularly when it comes to sneakers. However, with the rapid pace of current trends, it was inevitable that my reliable Sambas would be relegated to the back of my closet in favor of newer styles. This fall, a new selection of sneakers is stepping into my regular rotation. I'm not suggesting you say goodbye to your Sambas, as we know from experience that trends tend to return eventually. (We’ve all disposed of items only to regret it later.) I merely recommend setting your Sambas, along with a few other sneaker trends, aside for this fall. Below, I'm highlighting five styles I’m purchasing this season and the ones I’m putting on hold for now.
Buying: Canvas
Retiring: Mesh
The sneaker trends this fall range from bold to minimalist, with canvas sneakers firmly in the latter category. After Prada showcased this simple style on its spring 2026 runway, it quickly gained popularity among the fashion community—especially Gen Z influencers like Olivia Rodrigo. Their subtle appeal makes them a great complement to fall staples like cashmere sweaters and dark denim.

Get ready to add some flair this autumn with embellished sneakers, featuring rhinestones, studs, and other striking details. Miu Miu played a significant role in bringing this trend to the forefront—just take a look at their Trail Grip Embellished Sneakers. If those are beyond your budget, many other brands are putting their own twist on this style.

Buying: Chocolate Brown
Retiring: Black
If you thought the chocolate-brown trend had peaked, think again. This fall, this rich hue is reentering our sneaker collections, thanks to brands like Nike, ALO, and Reformation. I can already envision pairing chocolate-brown sneakers with cuffed jeans and a V-neck sweater in the upcoming months.

- Toteme Leather-Trimmed Shell Sneakers
Buying: Satin
One footwear trend that is just beginning to gain traction is satin shoes. While satin ballet flats have been popular lately, I anticipate that sneakers made from this shiny fabric will be equally sought after this fall. Can you think of a more beautiful shoe trend? I'll wait.
