This '90s romantic comedy serves as my ultimate source of autumn style inspiration. Here's why it should inspire you as well.

      Confession: I've seen Nora Ephron's You’ve Got Mail around 200 times. It's the only film saved on my laptop. I can probably quote more lines from it than necessary, but like most of Nora Ephron’s works, it’s helpful during daily challenges (“leave the gun, take the cannoli!”). Watching You’ve Got Mail has been my fall ritual since my mom purchased it on VHS in 1999. I get lost in the dialogue, especially words like thither.

      Recently, I’ve been even more captivated by its '90s fashion choices—particularly by Parker Posey as Patricia Eden.

Millennials like me can likely envision her character, Patricia Eden—who is Tom Hanks’s girlfriend before Meg Ryan's character. However, a Gen Z individual who hasn’t recently explored Parker Posey due to The White Lotus might not easily recall her.

Parker Posey as Patricia Eden makes her first appearance—or "Patricia Makes Coffee Nervous," as her boyfriend affectionately describes her—in a breakfast scene. She bursts into the kitchen in search of coffee, talking rapidly to a confused Tom Hanks, dressed entirely in black, her hair styled back with one of those iconic '90s tortoiseshell clips. This look perfectly encapsulates the sophisticated, ambitious '90s New York woman and could easily suit a 30-something fashion journalist in Paris today. The fierce elegance is timeless and versatile. Costume designer Albert Wolsky clearly knew what he was doing.

      The standout Patricia scene occurs at an apartment cocktail party, where she mixes vodka tonics and delivers blunt truths to unsuspecting literary types while wearing a black Mandarin-collared jacket (possibly velvet), reminiscent of those trendy versions from Róhe and Zara. She pairs this with dark red lipstick and that same tortoiseshell clip in her immaculate black bob. For your information, I plan to replicate her outfit exactly at cocktail parties this October.

Regardless of your opinion, Patricia is unapologetically herself, and that’s what makes her so captivating. She is direct and knows exactly what she wants, whether it be the perfect leather gloves or laser eye surgery.
