I No Longer Wear These Old Staples—6 Items I'm Purchasing to Refresh My Wardrobe
I genuinely attempt to donate as much clothing as I acquire, which is essential when living in a New York City apartment. However, I must admit that I've been lagging in the donation department recently. My shopping has not ceased, and my closet clean-outs have noticeably diminished. A brief pause would be manageable if I had a basement or, even better, if I was open to renting a storage unit. Unfortunately, I'm not, so my single closet is completely overflowing, making it a struggle to find space to hang anything without nearly injuring my back. My solution? You've already guessed it.
When I need some serious motivation, I transform the task into a narrative. This approach prevents me from avoiding it. If you’re aware, there’s something known as deadlines, and I despise missing them. With some spare time last weekend, I stood in front of my closet and started to catalog my items, beginning with wardrobe essentials that no longer fit into my dressing routine. Once vital, chunky sweaters and ultra-wide-leg jeans now sit untouched in my closet, so they need to go. (Sorry.)
Below, you can see which six outdated staples I'm discarding in 2025 and learn about the six fresh ones I'm purchasing instead.
One chunky sweater can remain, but the seven that are stashed in a bin under my bed and have been ignored throughout fall and winter must be eliminated. They had their moment, but nowadays, I prefer a classic fitted cardigan paired with a white tee underneath. You can button it all the way up or take a daring approach by leaving the tee off and unbuttoning a few buttons. I like to tuck mine into jeans, skirts, and pants, experimenting with various colors and materials, ranging from merino wool to cashmere.

I previously depended on my long slip skirts for work whenever I was unsure of what to wear—they were true wardrobe staples. Nowadays, I rarely reach for them. Instead, I'm opting for shorter, more modern alternatives that hit around the knee and feature a delicate lace trim at the hem. J.Crew's skirt is my favorite, and with several brands jumping on the trend, I'm gradually building a collection.

Jeans have a very personal nature. If you discover a denim style that fits your body well, there's no need to switch it up just because trends have changed. Conversely, just because a certain shape is in vogue doesn’t mean you have to conform. Ultra-wide-leg jeans were once my go-to, even though they never suited me well. Now that stovepipe jeans have emerged, I’ve found they flatter my shape far better, which is why I'm swapping all my wide-leg jeans for stovepipe—not just for 2025 but likely for good.

Do you remember when pouch bags, whether drawstring or clutches, were the only bags anyone used? I certainly wasn’t immune to their charm. However, these days, I’m more inclined to choose an east-west shoulder bag or clutch over the pouches of the past. I've had my eye on Coach’s Empire bag for months, just as I did with Alaïa's Le Teckel until I visited Paris and bought one. I prefer styles with longer straps that can accommodate puffy sleeves and heavy coats, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the east-west design offers ample space for all my essentials.

In the past, we often heard "the chunkier, the better" regarding sneakers, but after years of trendiness, there’s been a shift and fashionable individuals are leaning toward sleeker, low-profile sneakers reminiscent of those from 1970s track-and-field events. Brands like Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten, Adidas, J.Crew, and others fully embrace the '70s sneaker trend, and I’m on board too.

As a singer who combines national motifs with modern pop music, ISAXO is a new name on the Russian music scene, but behind this pseudonym there is already a recognizable style in which tenderness and mystery are intertwined with oriental sensuality and topical pop sound. The artist chose the name ISAXO for a reason: it reflects her inner world — soft, romantic and emotional. This is not…
