This Elevated Basics brand is the best-kept secret among fashion enthusiasts in NYC and London.
Welcome to Let's Get a Room, a series in which editor Eliza Huber visits the dressing room to try on items from your favorite retailers, trendy pieces, and fresh collections. Consider this column a comprehensive guide to the items worth purchasing and those that, regrettably, looked better online—no returns needed. Aligne is a brand frequently discussed in the Who What Wear office, whether it's because one editor has spotted a potential viral item on its website or someone is inquiring about the source of their waistcoat, skirt, or sweater. (The answer? Aligne.) During my last visit to one of the London-based label's previews in New York, I coincidentally encountered six other Who What Wear editors. Just to clarify—this was not planned.
So, when I learned that Aligne was launching a pop-up shop this spring in the city, I knew I had to stop by and give it the Let's Get a Room experience. What I didn’t anticipate was how much I would want to take home after trying everything on. Let’s just say it was quite a bit—more than I could fit in the limited two inches of hanger space left in my Upper West Side apartment.
Below, you can see the six outfits I put together during my visit to Aligne's inaugural pop-up at 27 Greene Street in SoHo. One of the most sought-after items this year has been Aligne's Daphne Waisted Knit, which is likely why it’s constantly sold out online. However, at Aligne's Greene Street store, I found it available in all three colors. After trying on the navy version, I completely understood the excitement surrounding it. The fit is snug yet soft and comfortable, resembling a tailored waistcoat more than a typical sweater. I paired it with some relaxed white linen pants, and I loved the elevated yet easygoing vibe that the combination exuded. For the pants, I opted for two sizes up to achieve a truly casual fit, which I’m looking forward to wearing this summer while traveling in Italy.

While Aligne has been gaining recognition for its bold colors lately, I’ve always leaned towards the brand's neutral shades, especially black. As soon as I entered the store, this hyper-tailored blazer caught my attention, and I chose a size down to better highlight my waist. The silver hardware, wide neckline, and exaggerated collar enhance the already chic silhouette. Though I could envision pairing it with various styles, including slip and A-line skirts, I ultimately chose a pair of slightly flared black trousers that added to the blazer's sophisticated allure. They fit perfectly and are destined to become my go-to trousers for 2025.

I have a fondness for white linen dresses in the spring and summer and already own so many I can’t possibly add another. Conversely, I have far fewer black linen dresses, which is why I immediately grabbed this waisted mini version at Aligne as soon as I spotted it. My favorite feature is the tie in the back that allows for an adjustable fit at the waist, giving the dress a customizable shape.

What could be better than one trendy yet timeless car coat priced reasonably at $260? Two for the price of one, of course. That’s exactly what I experienced with this reversible sand-and-navy trench that I felt I had to try on at Aligne's pop-up. I took a photo of it on the sand side, with the navy accents visible, and of course, I flipped it around to examine the other side too. The navy version? Just as perfect (but you already knew that).

During my hour and a half at Aligne, I observed four different people trying on this same vest, and each one looked amazing in it. It fit everyone like a glove—think of it as the waistcoat equivalent of the jeans from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I even spotted another fashion editor there, and yes, she also chose to take this vest home. The color is an olive tone, and the texture appears quite luxurious. I paired it with the previously mentioned flared trousers, but I can easily see this vest pairing nicely with jeans and silky skirts.

Lastly, I put together a white-skirt ensemble that surprised me with how much I loved it. I don’t often create midriff-baring outfits anymore,
