Russia's first interactive digital attraction "Night Derby" has opened in the Island of Dreams

Visitors will enjoy a driving game on bumper cars in the surroundings of the roofs of the night city

For almost five years, the Island of Dreams cultural and entertainment cluster has been steadily increasing the number of attractions in the theme park. Since the opening of the Island of Dreams in 2020, their number has more than doubled — there are now 49 attractions in the park.

The Night Derby is Russia's first interactive digital attraction, in which the classic bumper cars type attraction has been upgraded and combined with an interactive projection system.

It took more than two years to create a new themed space for the Night Derby digital attraction with the production of all facilities and the installation of equipment. The attraction's 1,500-square-meter location is a fantastic night city, and interactive games take place right on the roofs of makeshift buildings.

Two play areas have been created in the "Night Derby" space, designed for visitors of different ages. The capacity of the two zones is designed for 40 cars: 25 of them are designed for adults, 15 for younger visitors over 105 centimeters tall.

"This is a completely new product for the Russian entertainment market. The main feature of the attraction is the synergy of the classic attraction and modern technologies. In other words, you control a physical object and you are "in the game"," comments Mikhail Kondratiev, CEO of Regions Entertainment JSC.

A machine position tracking system has been created specifically for the attraction, which, together with a projection system consisting of 21 projectors, allows you to bring a new experience to the classic "physical" attraction.

There are a total of 4 games available to visitors at the digital autodrome, which are dynamic arcade games with clear mechanics. The game appears right "on the track" of the attraction, and incredible transformations await all participants of the race.

The speed of the cars is currently up to 1.1 m per second, the engines of the cars can move faster or slower, but they are calibrated so that the attraction is both interesting and safe for visitors of all ages.

"The manufacturer of the attraction is a foreign one, while the sensor system in our cars was created by a Russian company, residents of Skolkovo, they specialize in optical-inertial positional tracking systems. The system allows you to very accurately track the position of objects in a certain area. In our case, the room is large, and up to 40 people can participate in a racing game in two halls at the same time. At the same time, all participants perform a game scenario, and it is critically important to keep track of where each of them is as accurately as possible. Every millimeter is important! There is a tracker located behind the player's back, and IR markers are located in the ceiling that read the tracker's position in space. That is, they show exactly where a particular machine is located in real time. The game server reads this information and transmits the image through the projector. Animation appears around the machine, and the game broadcast begins," says Mikhail Kondratiev.

"In order to accurately track all the gaming machines, it was necessary to place sensors on the stream with an error of no more than 3 mm. For this purpose, a computer simulation of the ceiling was previously performed, and later the ceiling panels were milled on numerically controlled machines, in which the positioning system was installed," adds Gleb Paul, Technical Director of Regions Entertainment JSC.

In order for the attraction to become themed and visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the game, all systems consisting of both technical and visual aspects were synchronized.

"The most difficult thing in the implementation of this project was to find a balance between the lighting design of the space to create an atmosphere and the illumination required for the projection of the room. Literally every detail is important: it was necessary to choose the material and color of the coating — to make the floor as smooth as possible so that the cars could drive easily and freely, and the picture broadcast by the projector was displayed brightly enough. And only after installing all the elements of the attraction, we started setting up all the lighting, in which the projection would be clearly distinguishable for the players," says Gleb Paul.

More than ten teams of specialists from various fields were involved in the implementation of the project: builders, engineers, programmers, projection system designers, electrical equipment installers, the attraction itself, calibrators of the machine positioning system, decorative props for creating small, architectural forms and decorative elements indoors, and other specialists.

In total, more than 60 people worked on the architecture, design, and electronics of the Night Derby space."

The interactive digital attraction "Night Derby" became the seventh attraction in the "Under the Dome" theme zone, which opened in December 2023.

Interesting facts about the Night Derby attraction:

The position of the machines is monitored by 633 sensors.

The game is broadcast by 21 projectors.
