Cone bras are the daring and unconventional trend that I find irresistible, which is why I decided to purchase one.
By April 1990, Madonna had attracted attention due to the controversial religious themes in her "Like a Prayer" music video, her blending of BDSM and Catholic imagery, and her exuberant dancing on stage. However, on the opening night of her Blond Ambition tour, she grabbed even more headlines. When she tore off her striped pinstripe suit to unveil a specially designed corset bodysuit by Jean Paul Gaultier, featuring two cone-shaped bra cups with embroidery resembling bullseyes, it sparked widespread discussion. Madonna had approached Gaultier to create her tour wardrobe because she admired the way his designs fused feminine and masculine elements. The cone bra transformed a traditionally soft item into something decidedly sharp and assertive. This bra was not merely for support but was also perceived as a powerful symbol. The cone bra further cemented Madonna's control over her sexuality and her disregard for others' opinions about it.
Gaultier's original cone bra debuted on the runway as part of his fall/winter 1984 Barbès collection, showcased through a velvet orange dress with far more exaggerated cones than Madonna's. It epitomized an editorial aesthetic. It prompted women to challenge the conventional notions of sexiness by destabilizing preconceived ideas. Gaultier demonstrated that being sexy could also encompass strength or oddity. A bra didn’t necessarily have to appear soft and revealing. Despite igniting many discussions, the cone bra was ultimately something women contemplated more than actually wore.
Since then, the cone bra has not received much attention. By 2025, many women have opted out of wearing bras altogether, whether coned or not. However, Mrs. Prada has revitalized the conversation around the cone bra with her fall/winter 2025 show. During the recent fashion month, on the Miu Miu runway, the designer, who has been a trendsetter for decades—especially in the last five years—showcased models in micro Miu Miu mini cone bras. These bras diverged from Gaultier's in that they were more implied than overtly visible; you could tell the models wore them because they peeked out beneath their long-sleeved shirts.
The internet was abuzz with the question, “Can Miu Miu make the cone-bra trend possible?” I believe it can. Everyone seems eager to embody the Miu Miu aesthetic, and if a Miu Miu girl dons a cone bra, the masses will likely follow suit, even if it leans towards an unconventional notion of sexiness compared to a tiny miniskirt. Mrs. Prada has created a world everyone longs to be a part of, and if access requires a cone bra, women will embrace it.
Additionally, the timing feels right for something unconventional like cone bras to become trendy. The hold of minimalism is waning, leading to a growing appetite for the more outrageous. As women face greater challenges to be seen and heard, a cone bra serves as an ideal emblem of defiance. It's also a bit absurd and humorous, which the world could certainly use more of—it's fashion that makes you smile, embodying the sentiment of "It isn't that serious."
While we might not see many cone bras available until Miu Miu unveils them for the fall season, I did find one from a small shop called What Kate Did, which specializes in recreating vintage styles for the modern era. Wearing it felt both naughty and quirky, drawing attention beneath my cotton t-shirt. However, I soon realized that the look was far less intimidating than I initially thought and was not much different from going without a bra.
With that in mind, I think we should all explore this upcoming trend and channel our inner Madonna and Miu Miu girl. It’s precisely what the fashion landscape needs right now.
