I Oppose Blow-Drying—These Air-Dry Products Are My Secret for Smooth, Shiny Hair

I'll be frank, I only started using a hair dryer after cutting my long hair and attempting to style a bob. For years, I preferred to let my hair air dry, allowing it to dry naturally and slowly. Why? Mainly because I was lazy, and air drying meant one less step in my hair styling routine. Additionally, I've struggled to master blow drying, opting to leave it to professionals rather than trying to achieve a voluminous blowout at home. That said, I haven’t compromised on achieving a sleek, shiny appearance; I just had to find alternative methods to do so. For special occasions, this usually involved straightening or curling my hair once it was fully dry to achieve my desired look; however, sometimes that feels like too much effort. During those low-maintenance days, I embrace my natural texture and turn to the best air-dry products to define my naturally wavy hair, creating a more effortless look with items like hair creams and wave sprays that shape and reduce frizz without additional heat.

Before diving into those products, it's important to discuss air drying in general, as there's a lot of information circulating in the beauty world regarding its effects on hair. To clarify, I decided to consult an expert, Neale Rodger, style director at STIL salon. Here’s what he shared:

Is Air Drying Good for Your Hair?

“Yes, it can be! Air drying is an excellent way to prevent heat damage from blow dryers and styling tools, but it has to be done correctly,” he explained. “A few things to consider: hair is very delicate when wet, so avoid rough towel drying or aggressive brushing. Also, keeping your hair wet all day isn’t ideal, as it can lead to hygral fatigue, meaning your hair becomes worn out from repeatedly soaking and drying.” Therefore, if your hair takes forever to dry, this method might not be suitable for you. “Letting it remain wet can also promote the growth of fungus, leading to issues like dandruff,” Rodger added, suggesting that if you notice these problems, it might be time to reassess your drying routine. “However, air drying is particularly beneficial for wavy, curly, or fine hair that doesn't respond well to heat. Just let it settle naturally.”

Is It Bad to Sleep With Wet Hair?

“It’s not an ideal habit,” Rodger warned. “Wet hair is weak, and moving around while sleeping can cause breakage, frizz, or those pesky morning cowlicks. A damp scalp also creates a cozy environment for fungus and dandruff, which no one wants. And let's face it, you’re likely to wake up with strange, lumpy hair.”

“If you must sleep with wet hair, I recommend using a silk pillowcase or wrapping your hair in a silk scarf,” Rodger suggested. “A loose braid can keep your hair in check, and if possible, towel dry or use a little low heat before bed.”

How to Air Dry Your Hair Effectively

“My first tip is to replace your towel with a microfiber one or a cotton t-shirt, as these materials create less friction and are much gentler on your hair,” Rodger advised. “Apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream immediately after washing to maintain smoothness and definition, and avoid touching your hair while it dries, as this can lift the cuticles.”

“If you have waves or curls, try wrapping your hair in a t-shirt or putting it into a loose protective style like a braid to shape it nicely,” he continued. “Always allow your hair to dry in a well-ventilated space, not a steamy bathroom, and gently detangle it while still wet with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Be gentle, and you'll achieve the best results.”

Based on Rodger's insights and my own experiences, I've compiled a selection of top air-dry products that will leave your strands feeling soft and looking smooth. Get ready to set aside your hair dryer and reach for these air-dry products instead.

      How I Tested

As I mentioned before, I've always relied on an air-dry haircare routine, and over the years, I’ve tested numerous products designed to help define hair without heat. My hair is fine with a mix of waves and curls, so I generally prefer lightweight products that provide definition and hold without weighing my hair down. For thicker and curlier hair, I consulted fellow beauty editors and friends for their recommendations on their favorite air-dry products. Keep reading to see the results...
