Last week, New York experienced a heat wave with temperatures soaring above 100ºF. Shortly thereafter, a power outage occurred on my block, disabling two of the three air conditioners in my apartment. The timing was incredibly unfortunate and tested my patience. There was hardly any refuge from the heat, and choosing my outfit felt like an overwhelming task. For the first time, I couldn't even consider putting on clothes at all.

After finally settling on a very lightweight vintage minidress, I opted to take my dog for a walk. I immediately regretted this choice when I saw what everyone else in Brooklyn was wearing: silk scarves tied around their midsections as tops. While my dress clung to my skin in every direction, the scarves I admired seemed to float effortlessly, showcasing just the right amount of shoulder, back, and arm for optimal tanning.

Wearing scarves as tops isn't a brand new idea, but it reminds me of tube tops, as we often overlook them in favor of tank tops and T-shirts. A scarf offers all the necessary coverage while being exceptionally airy and loose. Once you invest in one, you can wear it throughout the year, even when the weather is milder. It can be styled as a top over another shirt or tied around a bag for a playful accent. You can adorn it around your neck or your hips. Personally, I plan to utilize all these options, regardless of a heat wave or a malfunctioning air conditioner.

Here are some of the best scarf tops available:
