The outfit trend favored by it girls throughout every era is returning for summer 2025.
Even during a heatwave, fashion enthusiasts refuse to abandon a denim-on-denim ensemble. The Canadian "tuxedo," as some refer to it, has made a return just in time for the end of summer. Living in NYC, I frequently admire various denim outfits from head to toe during my daily commutes. Whether I'm on the subway in Brooklyn or wandering around the city, denim-on-denim is still prevalent. I recall being enamored with double-denim looks when I first arrived in the city, viewing it as both innovative and daring. Now, it has practically become a signature style among the trendsetting girls in NYC.
The double-denim trend first emerged in the 1950s, with Marilyn Monroe showcasing it in the 1961 film The Misfits, making it a coveted style of the time. The relaxed fit became a recurring theme throughout the years. Oversized double-denim outfits filled MTV music videos in the '90s, and Naomi Campbell's complete denim look at the Tom Oldham S/S '97 runway is unforgettable. Then came the iconic moment between Britney and Justin at the 2001 American Music Awards. Fast forward to today, fashion cycles at a rapid pace, and this trend is set for a comeback in 2025.
Denim dominated the S/S 25 runways, as brands like Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Simone Rocha, and Stella McCartney embraced the double-denim trend. Naturally, this style is seamlessly transitioning into the summer months. Influencers like Rihanna and Sami Miro have recently highlighted that this classic trend is here to stay for another season. I wore double denim frequently in the spring, and now I'm reaching for it again in the summer. While you might think it's too hot for denim, lightweight chambray shirts and denim shackets are perfect for this weather. I'm spotting co-ords in loose silhouettes, long A-line skirts paired with short-sleeved denim tops, and jorts combined with oversized shackets. We're not restricting double-denim outfits this summer. If you're not either, keep scrolling for double-denim outfit inspiration and explore denim pieces ranging from skirts to jorts.
**Double Denim with a Long Skirt**
In my view, long denim skirts don’t receive enough appreciation these days. They can give an outfit an edgier vibe, especially in a double-denim look, making it more unexpected than traditional jeans. This versatile piece can easily be dressed up or down and worn year-round.

**Double Denim with a Miniskirt**
Miniskirts are essential for the NYC heat, so why not opt for a denim miniskirt? They are practical for warm weather and timeless in style. Denim miniskirts were all the rage in the early 2000s, and I can confidently say I have a few childhood photos of me wearing one. They still look great with jelly shoes if that’s your style. Otherwise, a range of footwear from knee-high boots to flats pairs beautifully.

**Oversized Double Denim**
You can never go wrong with a classic oversized double-denim ensemble. It’s effortless, stylish, chic, and, best of all, comfortable. You can mix and match different denim washes or stick to a single color. Personally, I prefer mixing shades to add depth to my outfit, similar to the look below. Notice how it also includes a button-down shirt instead of a heavy jacket, which helps keep cool in the summer heat while sporting double-denim.

**Fitted Double Denim**
If oversized isn’t your thing, consider a fitted denim style in the same wash as shown below. Try leaving a few buttons undone at the top for a cinched waist effect. I often do this with my denim jackets when I want to look a bit dressier for an occasion while still being comfortable.
