When Freaky Friday was released in 2003, it quickly became a beloved teen classic. With Lindsay Lohan’s edgy mall-punk vibe and Jamie Lee Curtis’s comedic parenting antics, the body-swap comedy delivered a blend of heart, humor, and distinctive Y2K beauty trends, particularly characterized by bold highlights and pronounced eyeliner. Now, over two decades later, Freakier Friday continues the story where the original left off. The sequel brings back Lohan and Curtis (yes, they are switching roles again) while introducing a new generation to the body-swapping fun through Anna’s daughter, Harper, and her soon-to-be stepdaughter, Lily. The movie restores the iconic chemistry between Lohan and Curtis, packed with clever nods, nostalgic cameos, and numerous style highlights worth admiring. But one of the most understated yet powerful aspects? The makeup!

As they prepared to return to the Freaky Friday universe, Lohan knew just who she wanted on her glam squad: acclaimed makeup artist Linda Dowds. The Oscar and Emmy-winning artist had previously collaborated with Lohan on 2024’s Irish Wish, and Lohan personally invited Dowds to be part of the film. (Due to another commitment toward the end of filming, makeup artist Tricia Sawyer stepped in to assist during the final week.) With Lohan portraying both her original character, Anna, and her onscreen daughter Harper in a new twist on the body-swap narrative, Dowds had to create two unique yet related makeup styles. “Of course, you want some distinctions,” Dowds explains to Who What Wear. “But they can’t be overly extravagant. There also needs to be some subtlety involved.”

For Anna, who was in a band in her youth (Pink Slip forever!) and is now managing a pop star, her look needed to convey professionalism and sophistication. “We styled her makeup to reflect a more business-like appearance,” explains Dowds. “She always had lipstick on instead of a softer hue, and we emphasized her eyes more.” Dowds noted that the foundation had a bit more depth, and at times, she added a half or three-quarter lash for extra definition. In contrast, when Lohan played Harper, her look was much softer, more effortless, and occasionally sun-kissed, as Harper is passionate about surfing. “We avoided lipstick and opted for balms, like the little Kosasport [LipFuel Lip Balm] sticks,” Dowds shares. The eye makeup was also toned down, featuring only a light, sheer shimmer on the eyelids.

Additionally, keep an eye out for this almost hidden, beauty-themed Easter egg: Lohan’s nails. Since Harper is a surfer and loves the ocean, various sea-themed motifs appear (in one scene, she wears a sequin Staud dress adorned with dolphins). “I gathered some nail decals, and knowing that Harper was this little surfer with a beachy vibe, I found some that featured a starfish and an angelfish. There was definitely a theme. So, when [Lohan] portrayed Harper, we used those,” she explains. Conversely, Anna’s nails were kept neutral, featuring a sheer pink gel reminiscent of Essie’s Mademoiselle.

“Lindsay’s skin is breathtaking. It’s truly stunning,” Dowds says. Most of the time, Lohan arrived with her skin prepped, but on set, they ensured to have plenty of sun care products available, including ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica Ultralight Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+.

“Honestly, this was one of the best projects I’ve ever worked on,” says Dowds. The atmosphere on set—among the cast, crew, and returning stars—radiated genuine camaraderie and collaboration. “With Jamie and Lindsay… I don’t think a reboot could succeed without great chemistry, and with these two, the warmth is authentic, which becomes significant in the film,” she explains. “Everyone was incredibly nice. I felt fortunate to be a part of it. I cherish the original film, and witnessing an updated version was truly special.”
