This is unfiltered beauty at its best. This month, we spoke with Jenna Ortega. The 22-year-old actress and Dior Makeup ambassador is the face of the new Rouge Dior On Stage collection, and we were fortunate to catch her to discuss this exciting venture. "It’s so thrilling," she tells us. "I never thought I would get the opportunity to do something like this. The way it came about felt very organic and natural to my relationship with Dior, so it's pretty amazing." Below, we inquired about Ortega's favorite makeup products, her best beauty advice, and her secret mascara tip.
1. Which beauty product gives you the biggest mood boost? I think a lip product is really powerful because people's attention is drawn to your mouth first; the color of your lips is very significant.
2. Do you have a favorite lip product? Currently, I’m really enjoying the Rouge Dior On Stage Ultra Longwear Lipstick in Redwood Star.
3. If you could take someone else's makeup bag, whose would it be? Oh my god… would it be too common to say Kate Moss? How does she do it? I have no idea.
4. You can only use one product for the rest of your life—what would it be? That’s a tough one. I would probably stick with a lip product since you can also use it as blush.
5. What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received? It’s not something I was given directly; more like a natural realization from observing makeup looks I liked or people I admired. It’s about letting your skin shine through. I don’t prefer anything too heavy, and I used to feel really self-conscious about my freckles. I think too much makeup looks overwhelming on me; my face just doesn't suit it, so I focus on enhancing certain features or highlighting the stronger aspects of my face, which helps me feel like myself when I go out.
6. What's your signature fragrance? I actually just changed it, which is a bit nerve-wracking. I’m not sure how it’s going so far, but for a long time, I used Santal 33 by Le Labo.
7. What’s your biggest beauty no-no? I don’t have a strict no-no; more like a “that could have been a no-no.” But I wouldn’t admit it in the moment.
8. You’re getting your nails done. What’s your go-to color? Honestly, if I'm going to choose, I love a nude. A soft pink is really nice. But if I want something bolder, I like a deep, dark wine color. And definitely black, but I would never put black nail polish on my toes.
9. How do you use beauty to help get into character? Beauty is a way of expressing yourself. It's an important aspect of the process. Often with characters, I enjoy working with the hair and makeup artist to define the look; it’s like the character preparing herself each day. It’s fascinating to understand what matters to them and how they want to be perceived, so I often experiment with the makeup myself to get a feel for it and discover what feels natural to me. Sometimes, if I’m not fully confident in the character, trying different things helps; they can indicate what works or what doesn’t. For instance, when I played Wednesday Addams, it was clear if something wasn't pale enough, dark enough, or gray enough; it’s quite intuitive. If the makeup is off, it makes performing challenging because it feels silly.
10. Which of the characters you’ve portrayed do you think would have the best beauty routine and why? It depends on personal preference. I played a character named Cairo Sweet who was a bit pretentious but had exceptional taste due to her wealth and lifestyle, so I know she would have a fantastic array of products. Conversely, in a recent film called The Gallerist, I portrayed a character with a perfect blowout and matching eyeliner to her hair; everything about her was very curated. I feel like she’d also have a fabulous collection or at least some good beauty tips.
11. It’s a bad hair day. What do you do? I think you hide. A bad hair day can throw you off completely. Maybe wash your hair again, or if I have to go out, I’m wearing a hat. I dislike how my hair looks slicked back; I need some messiness. If it’s misbehaving, you won’t be seeing
