The Numbers Speak for Themselves: This Is the Sole Denim Trend Currently Outpacing Baggy Jeans في Popularity.
(Image credit: Christian Vierig/Getty Images) As a fashion editor, I draw upon various resources for my articles. Sometimes I consult experts for insights, like I did for my recent guide on purchasing vintage women's watches. At other times, I analyze runway shows for visual examples to bolster my latest trend observations. Today, I'm leveraging another resource: data. For statistical insights in the fashion sector, Madé Lapuerta, the founder of the well-known Instagram account Data, But Make It Fashion, is the go-to expert. It's clear Old Navy shares this sentiment, as they have collaborated with Lapuerta on a new denim analysis. By examining Google search traffic and thousands of online mentions, Lapuerta discovered that slim jeans are currently 43% more popular than last month, while baggy jeans increased by 22%. According to her report, skinny jeans and barrel jeans ranked third and fourth, respectively.
In an interview, Lapuerta elaborated on her methodology. "Most of the analyses I perform and share on Data, But Make It Fashion involve scraping and assessing as much public data as possible," Lapuerta shared with Who What Wear. "For the Old Navy denim report, I collected online posts mentioning 'denim' and various denim styles like 'skinny jeans' or 'barrel jeans' and evaluated their monthly volume and average sentiment (the positivity or negativity of each post or article). I also incorporated Google search traffic data. The integration of these metrics is crucial because it’s insufficient to report solely on the increase in mentions of a trend; we also need to consider the tone of those mentions. For example, an uptick in posts about skinny jeans doesn't necessarily mean they are more popular if the sentiment is negative. However, in this instance, the discussions about skinny jeans were quite positive, which was fascinating to observe." Scroll down for the remainder of our Q&A.

It’s fascinating to see two opposing trends gaining popularity simultaneously and to a similar degree. It’s possible that consumers genuinely enjoy both styles. As Old Navy noted, a significant majority (74% of consumers) have two to three denim styles they rotate. So, individuals might prefer skinny jeans for outfits like those paired with knee-high boots, while opting for baggy jeans in more casual looks, perhaps with a t-shirt and Uggs.
Alternatively, if the popularity is split between distinct groups favoring skinny jeans or baggy jeans, it could also suggest that consumers are simply excited about denim as we approach fall. Ultimately, with so many diverse styles gaining traction at the same time, it’s clear that interest in denim is thriving, regardless of the specific silhouette one favors.
Do you have any observations about the most popular shoe styles people are pairing with different jeans this fall? I haven’t examined shoe trends this season or their correlation with specific jean styles yet. However, one constant that I've noted from analyzing fashion trends on Data, But Make It Fashion is that the mini Ugg boot consistently regains popularity each fall. I could be mistaken, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see mini Uggs again paired with baggy or boot-cut jeans this fall. Personally, I'm a fan of that look.
In a broader sense, where do you believe people find their denim inspiration? Has this changed over the years since you launched your IG account? Over the past year, it’s been interesting to observe how nostalgia has become a strong influence on fashion trends. Many recent trend revivals—from Gucci belts to bandage dresses—stem from people revisiting styles we once loved. This extends to denim trends as well. I think that’s why skinny jeans remain popular despite the backlash against them. If we continue to draw inspiration from '90s and 2000s fashion, why wouldn’t skinny jeans be trending? The same applies to baggy jeans, which were most popular in the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, and are now favored by younger consumers. This trend explains why retailers like Old Navy are rolling out more slouchy styles, catering to consumer demand.
