Kristen Bell insists that her character Nobody Wants This is cooler than she is.

Last night at the Emmys, Kristen Bell received a nomination for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Joanne in the romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This. Her character’s unexpected romance with Rabbi Noah, played by Adam Brody, won over many viewers. I'll admit that I've rewatched their first kiss scene more times than I’d like to confess. Nearly everyone I know who watched it has done the same. But can you blame us? The show delivered the heartfelt story we all needed at this time, proving that the essence of romantic comedies isn't confined to the big screen.

For the occasion, Bell donned an outfit entirely by Armani. Her makeup artist, Courtney Hart, revealed that the inspiration for Bell’s look came from the gown itself. She also noted that Bell’s already flawless skin played a significant role. “With Armani being so timeless, I wanted to emphasize that signature luminous skin. The first detail that caught my eye was the black strapping on the dress, which I mirrored with a delicate black wing using the Smooth Silk Eye Pencil and a hint of black Eye Tint to enhance depth,” she explained. “I focused on the skin using the Luminous Silk Foundation to achieve that iconic Armani glow," she continued. "For the cheeks, I incorporated soft, pinkish tones inspired by the dress’s shimmer with the Luminous Silk Cheek Tints and a light dusting of powder blush. The overall look combines classic and modern elements, allowing Kristen to shine effortlessly, contemporary, and stylishly.”

When I asked Bell about how the look came together, she shared:

Did you have a vision for what you wanted to wear to the Emmys? Was there a specific look or aesthetic you drew inspiration from? Kristen Bell: I really didn’t have a specific vision! Our experience with Armani at the SAG Awards was so positive that we wanted to work with them again. The couture collection was presented in July, and Nicole picked our top looks for the show day, along with securing current options and one from Prive FW 2024. We had a fitting in August and narrowed it down to three options. We immediately knew which one it was!

Can you describe the look? How did you come to choose it and what do you love about it? KB: I adore the architectural black beaded bodice and the sheer embroidered skirt, which is both delicate and feminine. The detail on the skirt is incredible, and the sequins catch the light beautifully! It’s modern, sculptural, and romantic simultaneously—it’s rare to find a gown that feels both powerful and delicate!

What is your strategy for red carpet dressing? Does it align with your everyday style or is it different? KB: My stylist and longtime friend Nicole makes the selections, and then we have a fitting! We tend to prefer well-tailored, minimalist shapes. My everyday clothing is easy and comfortable, primarily switching between the Hey Gang sweatsuit in grey and in olive.

Is Joanne’s style similar to yours? If so, how, and if not, what sets it apart? KB: Not at all…Joanne is much cooler than I am. What do you think she’d wear if she were nominated for an Emmy? KB: If Joanne were nominated, she would probably design her dress from scratch with a stylish friend, making it sleek, clean, and very trendy. She would ensure that she and Morgan weren’t matching.

Could you highlight your favorite features of this makeup look? KB: Natural, glowing skin and a soft flush on the cheeks is my go-to for the red carpet. Courtney Hart, my makeup artist, created something that feels timeless and perfectly complements this stunning dress.

What are your favorite beauty products? KB: I love Luminous Silk—the foundation and concealer are just perfect! If you’re carrying a bag, what’s inside for an event like the Emmys? Any surprises? KB: A little Luminous Silk Concealer for touch-ups, plenty of snacks, and a beta blocker!

What rituals do you have before stepping onto the carpet to get in the zone or feel your best? KB: I always ensure that I eat a good meal and FaceTime my kids. Do you do any beauty preparations beforehand? KB: A face roller and eye patches are essential. Also, what fragrance are you wearing tonight? KB: I like to apply a bit of original Riddle Oil for a clean, subtle scent.
