Step into the realm of the most innovative creatives in the fashion world with our series My World, where readers will learn how leading stylists, designers, and trendsetters forged their careers; their go-to restaurants, favorite albums, and fabulous fashion finds; the etiquette they uphold; and much more. Navigating from showroom to showroom, powered by caffeine and sweets, Molly Dickson stands out as Hollywood's most energetic and adaptable stylist. How did she achieve this? Through patience and diligence. "It takes time!" Dickson shared with Who What Wear. "Many stylists believe they will be styling a cover shoot within a month or working with a celebrity immediately. There’s no guidebook for this profession, and it demands substantial effort. It took me almost nine years to land my first client. I began as an intern, then an assistant, before venturing out on my own. My best advice: work hard, treat everyone kindly, and exercise patience." This approach has proven successful, as reflected in her impressive roster of celebrity clients, including Lana Del Rey, Ariana Greenblatt, Sydney Sweeney, Keke Palmer, Sadie Sink, and many others. Below, gain exclusive insights into Dickson's world, from her essential wardrobe pieces to her favorite shows and music, her travel escapades, and of course, her top styling advice.
What does a typical day in your life look like? One of the most exciting aspects of my job is that every day is entirely unique. I understand how someone might not enjoy that, but for me, it’s a significant advantage. I can confidently say I’m never bored. Tired? Maybe. But never bored. A typical day starts with an early wake-up to check all my emails. Being in L.A. means I’m always catching up with Europe and NYC, so by then, my inbox is already filled. After going through my emails and touching base with my team, I set out for the day, which could mean heading directly to the office, dashing around L.A. for pulls, or off to a photo shoot. I constantly check emails throughout the day and prepare for fittings, which involves a mix of sending requests, making physical pulls at various showrooms, and hunting for that perfect piece. I enjoy the search and am wholeheartedly dedicated to it! I’m still sometimes surprised by the amount of research involved in styling, which often takes up most of my day. One of the most challenging aspects of the job is juggling multiple projects at once. It's common to be set for one job while simultaneously prepping three or four others.
Growing up in a small town in North Dakota, could you have envisioned building such a successful styling career? I can’t say I dreamed of this as a child in North Dakota, but growing up on a farm really ingrained a strong work ethic in me. I remember being young, watching my grandpa and dad rise before dawn and work until late at night during harvest; their dedication taught me the value of hard work.
Your first opportunity came at Marie Claire as a fashion intern in 2009. What is one lesson you learned there that has stayed with you throughout your solo career? I believe everyone should intern! My advice is to be hardworking and committed. Always be the first to arrive and the last to leave, and no task should be considered too small.
What do you enjoy about collaborating with Gen Z clients like 18-year-old Ariana Greenblatt? How does styling emerging talents differ from renowned names? I love working with young talent! I started collaborating with Sadie Sink when she was just 14, and now she’s 23. It’s exciting to work with young women, experimenting with their looks while ensuring they're age-appropriate. I enjoy helping them begin to develop their personal style both on and off the carpet. Ariana is genuinely one of a kind. She has a distinct vision for her wardrobe and is among the few fortunate ones who can pull off anything and look fantastic.
What has been your favorite outfit you've styled for Keke Palmer, and why? Keke is such a joy to work with. She adores fashion, is open to taking risks, and is a massive fan of vintage, making the creation of looks very enjoyable. Although it’s tough to pick just one, my favorite is the vintage 1993 Chanel Haute Couture outfit she wore to the BET Awards this summer.
You plan for various events, from artist tours to red carpets to fashion campaigns. What is the transition like between them? I have a little ADHD, so I genuinely appreciate the variety of different jobs every day. The world of music presents new challenges, as styling requirements vary, especially for performances. In music, you have to account for movement, quick changes, mic packs, and many others—a puzzle I love to solve. Campaigns are exciting because you often collaborate on major brand initiatives with incredibly talented teams, which is always inspiring. Then we have press tours and premieres,
